For a long time the G&D’s trio appeared to have a bit of a monopoly on the Oxford ice cream market. Their ice cream was innovative, delicious and fun, and they boasted an army of loyalist fans without any real threat from competition. Yet in the last five years or so the quality has dropped somewhat, and despite still being popular, another parlour has pinched its crown.
When Graham and co decided to open iScream the prospect truly excited me; finally, a new place to get good ice cream (well, gelato). I certainly wasn’t disappointed, I was in fact met with something better than I had initially anticipated. The gelato and sorbetto was - and continues to be - fantastic. It’s the perfect blend of traditional and experimental, is cleverly thought out and executed brilliantly. It’s clearly made by someone who loves what they do, which is apparent not only in the quality of the product but the interesting variety of flavours and combinations on offer.
Excellent customer service is another attribute iScream boasts. The team are wonderful, informative and always up for a chat. Graham is always more than happy to talk about his product range, especially if possible sorbetto and gelato flavour ideas are the topic of discussion.
In addition to everything else, the chocolate selection on sale is great and very diverse. Whether you’d like just plain dark chocolate or something wackier it’s all there, and is all top quality. It’s not only the best place in Oxford to buy ice cream/gelato, but chocolate as well.
A wonderful little place, deserving of all the awards it’s received and praise that’s been sent its way. Oxford is lucky to...
Read moreThe ice cream is overpriced and the portions are criminally small. I ordered a double scoop to share with my girlfriend and we were shocked to observe the server scrape a measly lump of gelato that was left over on the edge of the tub and smear it across the edge of the cone, watching on as it fell loosely into the cone due to its inadequate size, which was about the same length and width of an index finger. The second scoop, while far more acceptable, was still definitely less than half the size I would’ve expected. I have never seen such a small ‘scoop’ in my life, having myself worked serving ice creams, and if you think I am exaggerating you are welcome to go and waste your money as well. The ice cream itself was fairly mediocre, though definitely still tasty, so that is one redeeming factor, but nothing could bring this review above a 1 star considering that first...
Read moreGiven it’s the first gelateria in Oxford I was very excited to try it. I asked to sample the pistachio, it was very weak in flavor. It was like a fior di latte with just abit of pistachio paste smothered on top. Not a good first impression.
It was very busy, so I quickly asked for peach and raspberry. No doubt it’s very fresh. Given the kitchen lab is right there on display behind the display freezer, but the flavours were weak. You could barely taste the peach, the raspberry was better in flavor and taste. Texture was top, they use the best machines, but unfortunately I was very disappointed. Other gelaterias which are chains are better, it should be the other way around. I love gelato, i have very often, but this was a disappointment.
Freshness 10/10 Taste...
