We came here 24 years ago when we found it to be one of our worst pub experiences ever. A gutted cavernous barn of a place serving burnt pies. Now owned by Nicholsons it is as it should be. Large attractive beer garden and three well appointed levels of inside seating. There is even a bar billiard table to the rear second level. Excellent real ales. Paulicarus and Jorvic took a Farne Island beer. First since our Northumberland visit 4 months ago. Several TV's showing England v West Indies..we are doing OK at lunch Day 1. Good food menu. Would have been 1* 24 years ago according to Jorvic.

Well we went to get something to eat but well we were advised that there was a 45 minute wait and menu is limited, the fun is that you have to run back and forth your told to find a table that isn't reserved but then your supposed to leave your jackets then go back to the bar to order. I done that once after taking a seat going over the menu the only thing that interested me was runny scotch egg but when I went back to the bar advised sold out. Just found out they have an app that you order while seated, bar staff didn't say anything about that they advised had to order at bar

We called in on a Monday night hoping to have a good meal, it was quite. Choice of ales consists mainly of light IPA's. After reviewing the menu we made our selection, I went for the lamb shank pie, which was just about ok, veg was not very hot, even the gravy was just warm, the lamb was not great, given their tag line World famous not brilliant. The wife asked for the fish cakes with new potatoes, when it came out no potatoes, when they brought them out, they were crushed and not very good either. Would not rush back.

If you really want to make your trip nice and pleasant, please don't go there. AVOID by all means!!! I didn't have a chance to check if the food is descent as the appetite was lost way before the food was served. When I ordered a Smoked Salmon at the bar I was feeling that they have charged me wrong ÂŁ12.50 and asked again if it is a Smoked Salmon. Bartender confirmed. When I looked at the menu again I realised that that was for Salmon Filet. Then I came back and showed her my receipt asking to correct my order in a polite manner. She was absolutely arrogant and said: "I gave you a smoked salmon ( which was not true) and YOU have made a mistake". I replied that I can show her menu if she doesn't know it. Then a small staff guy interfered and he was even more rude. Although he hadn't heard any word from our talk with her he started telling me immediately what I should do and what I shouldn't. That was probably the first time in my life when a waiter talked to me in this manner. When I asked him to talk to the manager he shocked - manager was this blonde girl who had no idea about her own menu.

all this has not left me other options as leaving this nice place. If this is the best people the owner could find in Oxford than they have my sympathy and regret. These two will help this place to lose...

The Chequers is a pub we have been visiting for many years now, at least twice a year when we are in Oxford. We visited the pub twice in our short stay over Easter, at the start of our visit and at the end of it. We note that the real ale pumps have been reduced to just four, but we know that the pandemic has laid waste to many pubs, and real ale cannot be kept fresh for as long as other types of drinks, still a shame that the ale pumps are now just four, however it is great quality so I guess that's all good. We had a meal on our final visit, there was a new member of staff behind the bar who was struggling to process the products that I was ordering so a Manager appeared and helped her. I never did get my salad so I think it was not processed during my order but that's ok, everybody needs to learn and starting a new bar job can be daunting, as I know, having worked behind a bar for many years in my earlier life. So no worries, the other elements of our meal were very good indeed. I wish all at the Chequers well and hope we can return again at the soonest moment. I would recommend a visit here as it is a very interesting old building with much character, many quirky features and attractive stained glass windows in...

A nice pub with a good selection of beers, several screens for watching sports, and a decent terrace area. Unfortunately, the experience was completely let down by the extremely rude and unpleasant female manager with short hair.

While the bar staff were looking for the channel for the football match, I politely mentioned that it would be on the next page under TNT Sports, as they were struggling to find it. At that point, the manager began snapping at me, telling me not to come in and bother her staff, followed by several further rude, snappy, and argumentative comments. Overall, it was a completely avoidable, unnecessary, and unpleasant situation. I should also add that the delay in finding the correct channel meant we missed the first goal of the game.

It is disappointing to see that a very similar comment regarding the same staff member was made in a review a few months ago, indicating that no meaningful action has been taken to address this behaviour. If this is how she deals with customers, I can't imagine it is a very pleasant environment for her...
