Horrendous. Three friends had already ordered while me and another friend kept the table they were told that our order would be placed together however instead we were told to order food in 30 minutes 3 times so hadn't ordered for 1 hour and 30 minutes when asked to speak to the manager because by this point our friends had there food while we still hadn't ordered, the bar tender said its not a good idea. When I went to approach the manager she ran off into the kitchen after dealing with similar issues with other customers who were obviously more wealthy (I'm a student). So I asked another employee to resolve the situation he took off and was in the kitchen for 30 minutes when he said he'd be right back. I then had to get another employee to go get the first one, which took another 15 minutes (I was able to see the guy in the kitchen he then realised I could see him and disappeared) By this point I was furious and moved to the bar to attempt to order but by this point, they were able to take orders again but instead of serving us first we had to wait in the queue even though we had been waiting for 2 hours to order and I'm pretty sure they recognised us by this point. Anywho all I can say they were so unhelpful and rude. Never again. They can't deal with problems professionally and the were...
Read moreHaving visited this truly historic pub in the past, my good friend and I included it in our 'must see' pubs during our annual 'Morse Trail' tour on Good Friday. How very disappointing to find that the character of this pub appears to have been stripped out completely since our last visit (2019). Available beers were quite 'routine' with no explanation of their characteristics offered by the staff when requested. The 'snacks' on offer were extremely ordinary; you could pay £4.50 for a 'home-made' sausage roll which has been on display for goodness-knows how long. Alternatively, you can have a 1/2 pint glass of 'nuts and bolts', which is essentially mixed cheap biscuits, nuts etc. We watched many potential customers walk into, and out of, the pub without any interaction from the (3) bar staff, although the pub was not busy. All in all, a very poor experience in what should be a thriving pub in the heart of Oxford. I would not want overseas visitors to measure what Oxford can offer from this pub. As a comparison, we visited two other local and well-established pubs later in the day, and would highly recommend them for service and...

It is a small place, but that does not make it any less worth a visit. It can, very quickly, become crowded.
There is no jukebox or piped musak or TV, so you will have to talk to people, which means that, more often than not, you will an interesting stranger or three, who, this being Oxford, could be from just about anywhere in the world.
The atmosphere is always friendly, and this charming pub has the added benefit of being located on one of the world's most beautiful streets, opposite Wren's...
