We happened across the Hook & Line whilst on our way to catch the ferry to the Barbican, and after a quick look at the menu decided to book a table for our return. It’s owner Steve is a lovely chap and it turns out he owns and runs the ferry and a small fleet fishing boats, so his fish is always fresh. The old building is an impressive space and staff were attentive and friendly. The service was excellent. We had a prawns to start which were delicious, and then West Country Mussels and chips. Very generous portions and the plump mussels were fresh and perfectly cooked in a coriander, lime and chilli sauce which was amazing. Deserts were also well worth having, as were the Rum cocktails which the bar staff guided us through. Overall there is great welcoming atmosphere created by Steve and his staff. Our food was very tasty and we couldn’t help notice some great looking dishes being delivered to neighbouring tables, so we will definitely be back next time we visit Plymouth.

I love me some seafood and have been meaning to try The Hook and Line for a while now. Boyfriend and I decided to eat here after watching a film at Everyman cinema. It was busy-ish, but we were seated quickly. Staff were friendly and attentive. The menu has a good selection; I chose the fried fish tacos and he had the chowder. Both dishes arrived promptly. I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive about mine as I did ask if I could have it without any coriander (I really HATE the stuff) but chef said the mix was pre-made so I took a gamble…I’m so glad I did! The tacos were lovely and quite a generous portion. The only thing I will say is that the salad/cabbage that was served with it was a little brown around the edges and perhaps past its best. Boyfriend really enjoyed his chowder and it came with a nice chunk of sourdough bread. We were both stuffed on leaving. Atmosphere is nice and relaxed with a very rustic decor. I will definitely return 😊

We had a very disappointing experience, especially given that we had booked for a special occasion well in advance. Our table was booked for 7pm, but service was slow from the outset. Starters didn’t arrive until 8.20pm, and the tiger prawn cocktail was particularly underwhelming — it contained no tiger prawns at all, just very small prawns.

We had ordered our mains at the same time as the starters, as not everyone in our small group was having a starter — so we had expected the kitchen to be aware and plan accordingly. However, by 9.10pm our mains still hadn’t arrived. When we asked, we were told they’d be another 15 minutes. At that point, we spoke with another large group nearby who were also still waiting for their mains. Both our party and theirs eventually left at 9.30pm, having received no main courses.

To be fair, the waitresses were lovely — very apologetic and clearly doing their best under difficult circumstances. However, the same can’t quite be said for the manager. While they did apologise, it didn’t feel proportionate to the situation and came across as somewhat disingenuous. We were told our food was nearly ready when we cancelled, but given that the other party also left without mains, we’re not convinced that was the case.

We were given some compensation on the bill, which was appreciated, but it didn’t make up for the evening being spoiled. A real shame — we were looking forward to it, but left very...

We went for dinner here after reading all of the great reviews. There were many things to like about this restaurant such as the ambience and the friendliness of the staff. However, we felt that the restaurant did not meet our expectations due to a number of reasons.

The main issue we had was the quality of the food.

I ordered the fish and chips, and the presentation was fantastic, so no problems there. Whilst the batter was nice and crispy, the fish itself was completely tasteless, bland and chewy. This is not what I would expect if the fish was fresh.

My partner ordered the seafood platter. There was plenty of food, but besides the muscles and bread which were both delicious, the rest of the meal was overcooked, bland, and lacked freshness.

After our meal we had to wait 20 minutes for the waitress to notice us and clear up our plates. We were not given the option to have dessert, which may have been because the kitchen was closed, but even so we should have been informed whilst ordering our main meal.

We felt like the restaurant was understaffed and the wine we ordered also never arrived, but it was charged to our bill.

Overall we left...

We wanted to have a meal for two without a reservation. A dirty chef greeted us at the entrance of the restaurant. Then the waiter came and said we could sit wherever we wanted, the restaurant was empty anyway. First we ordered our drinks, we wanted them to be non-alcoholic, and one of our drinks came with alcohol. We chose moktail but unfortunately it was a failure. We ate mussels and fish and chips. The plate I ate was horribly bad, the seafood was weak and stale, none of the products had any taste. It was freshly thawed and served. The fish and chips plate looked better. When the order was placed, it was prepared from scratch and served 25 minutes late. It is very sad that there is such a disappointing restaurant with such a beautiful concept. My wife went to the cash register to pay the bill, and we were shocked that the bill was extremely high, as if it wasn't enough that a lot of products arrived in bad shape. A 10% service fee was also requested. I didn't feel like paying this fee when no service was provided properly. I will never come again and never recommend it to anyone. And I'm sure this restaurant is run by people who don't know...
