This evening I visited the VOT for the first time with some friends. The bartender was welcoming and polite. To the right of us was the manager of the pub and another man who was so drunk he could barely focus nor speak. The manager decided it was a good idea to give the man a shot of Jack Daniels Fire, to which the man was so drunk he aspirated and choked on it, turning purple. This resulted in him vomiting down himself and the floor. The manager ended up giving him blue roll to vomit in, shouting at him to go to the toilet whilst nervously blaming the drunken man for vomitting on the floor and saying he'd had too much to drink. My friends and I had to tell the manager to go and check on the man in the toilet, to which the manager rolled his eyes and said “he’s fine, it’s his own fault for asking to play spoof with me”; a game I played as a teenager (utterly moronic response as a license holder). To be quite frank, my friends and I were utterly disturbed by what we had just witnessed. After 15 minutes he did check on the man and left him to walk back in the rain knowing how drunk he was. It was an embarrassment to see such behaviour by the staff who decided to laugh at the man. The arrogance and attitude and cowardice of the manager was disgraceful. My friends had brought me to enjoy a quiet drink on a Tuesday night in their local pub but we ended up leaving very quickly due to the strange environment. What a sad transition for a venue with such a longstanding name...
Read moreA simply outstanding unassuming family run craft pub/restaurant with garden.
Although it’s fairly out of the City Centre, it’s close to Royal William Yard, an attraction in itself these days. It was busy for a Saturday lunchtime service with couples, groups, locals inside, and those trying to get the last rays of warmish October sunshine in the garden.
The beer selection is quite frankly the best I’ve seen for around here, period. Verdant dominates the taps - which suits me just fine, it’s one of the country’s best craft breweries - but there is space for a Guinness and a Cider line as well as another excellent Pale Ale from a Cornish microbrewery and a Vault City sour. Cocktails also looked appetising. Plenty of other options, mainly from Verdant and Vault City in the beer fridge too.
The food - tapas - was wonderful. Calamari was great, Lamb Koftas likewise, but the Queso fundido con salsa Mariana (melted Brie with a tomato sauce and bread for dipping) was simply superb.
Service was friendly, knowledgeable and quick. It looked like many tables were reserved for evening service, so it’s highly recommended to book in advance.
It’s not the cheapest place for food and drinks, don’t get me wrong, but you pay for quality and this has it...
