After seeing the many good reviews we were compelled to travelled from another town to try this place out, and it truly was a hidden gem, kind of in the middle of nowhere but the authentic Japanese and Malaysian cuisine is definitely one to boast about. Beverages were your typical juices, soy milk and teas, all refreshing and warming. First dish to come out was the char kuey teow and while the portion was a tiny bit smaller than expected, you can simply smell ots authenticity through the smoky "wok hei." It tasted as good as it smelled to say the least. Next was the tekoshu sets, of which was definitely worth the money. We got the tempura and sashimi one. Tempura vegetables were tender, sweet and crisp, while the prawns were juicy. California rolls were, I mean your average kind just more fresh. Nothing to fault so far. Perfectly balanced salad and pickled vegetables, hefty amount of rice and great miso soup. The sashimi was great. I've had fresher octopus and white fish, but the tuna and salmon definitely surpassed other great restaurants I've tried in cardiff, despite being a more chunky slice. The octopus and white fish was a bit more chewy despite the thin cuts, whereas the salmon and tuna were thick which made me question whether they too would be hard to eat, but I was wrong. They were incredibly tender and melted in my mouth. Their signature aburi red dragon rolls were to die for, expensive, but definitely a treat - they are giant! On par with sushi I've tried in Asia. Mee goreng was nice, not a big fan of mee goreng myself but it was pretty good. Unfortunately the curry puffs did not meet our expectations, they were bad per se, just I have incredibly high expectations on curry puffs after critiquing a load in Asia. Service however was incredibly friendly and rapid, though at the time we were the only table there. Decoration of the restaurant was very appealing too. Cannot praise this restaurant enough!!

My recent visit to Rakuzen, a Japanese restaurant, was nothing short of spectacular. The atmosphere exuded a pleasant charm, setting the stage for an enjoyable dining experience. The service at Rakuzen was a standout feature – not only were the staff polite, but their efficiency in attending to our needs was commendable. Despite not having reservations on a bustling Friday evening, they effortlessly found a table for us, showcasing their dedication to customer satisfaction. The food at Rakuzen was a culinary delight. Each dish was expertly crafted, delivering a burst of flavors that left a lasting impression. The menu's diversity and the quality of ingredients showcased the restaurant's commitment to providing an authentic Japanese dining experience. In summary, Rakuzen offers a nice atmosphere, swift and polite service, and, most importantly, delicious Japanese cuisine. Whether you're a seasoned sushi enthusiast or new to Japanese flavors, Rakuzen promises a delightful dining experience that goes beyond expectations. I highly recommend it for a memorable evening out.

I am a vegetarian. This was the first time I tried Rakuzen. Although the options were limited, they offered to make other vegetarian dishes by replacing meat with tofu or vegetables. To be safe, I ordered soba noodles with vegetables. It was my first time having authentic soba noodles, and they were delicious. The fried tofu was amazing and my favorite dish out of everything I ordered. I also tried the caterpillar sushi roll, but when I asked if they could make a couple of other dishes vegetarian, I was told that the base sauce contained seafood. I really appreciate it when people are honest about the ingredients in their food. The restaurant has lovely paintings inside, and even though we went during a busy time, they were very accommodating and managed to find us a table. I will definitely go there again.

Highly recommended by a taxi driver for a fusion food restaurant after weeks of western food in uk.  It really gave great suprises and thumbs up of their cooking and services provided by Rakunzen. As a vegetarian, it was so thoughtful that the chef specially prepared a Japanese recipes in a bowl which was not in their menu. The serving was big and it was to my surprise that a simple looking rice bowl could taste so good. We came  back  to the restaurant again a week later for their vegetarian dumpling Ramen, it did not disappoint me at all with their consistent high standard for food. A happy eating out with my family members and friends ,  we were well  stuffed and very satisfied. We like the  restaurant ambience,  Japanese foods like Maki dragon sushi , cucumber sushi, ramen , beer, fruit drinks, etc. and also  their signature Singapore taste like Curry Laksa, Fried rice and Char Kuey Teow(fried noodles). The restaurant ambience, the appearance, lavish and taste of the food,  the serving portion and the considerate and thoughtfulness of their chef/waitress, and a reasonable price would make us no reason to reject. Oo yah !  Just don't miss out their unique homemade Sesame icecream and Green Tea Macha iceream you will regret for not tasting it !!

A full 'YES' for return !!   I would also recommend it to friends if they travel here for...

Wagamamas eat your heart out; this place outshines you in every way!

I am so pleased and amazed that this little gem is here in Portsmouth! We use to have to go to Central London to experience something as authentic and delicious as this!

OK the menu is over whelming, there is so much choice! But the portions are generous full of protein, lots of vegetarian options and spice levels.

It's the same price range as wagamamas but so much more value for money. I love the seating, the ambiance the homelike feel. The service is very friendly and helpful.

We tried the Tom yum soup, the laksa, house rice, roti. I wanted to try more but I was so full. So I just started choosing what we are going to have on our next visit. They have literally everything, satay, spring rolls, Noodles, curry, soups different combinations and variations.

Really child friendly they have the good high chairs (with trays) and even children's plates cutlery etc. (some colours and paper would be the cherry on the cake, means we could stay longer!)

I'm just so pleased we have found this place. Finally a delicious, healthy, welcoming, affordable place to regularly go to dine!

We will most...
