Disappointed that this seems to have gone down hill dramatically. When I used to come here the manager was Emma a blonde lady and the head chef was Cilla not sure of hair colour as obviouslyalways had a hat on when we saw her, both were incredibly nice people and food was really good, steak perfect everytime, but now I will not go back again. The last time I visited was around four months ago as I moved home and I actually have started to use another Greene King pub which is fantastic, but this day I met friends in Reading. Food was a long wait considering how many people were in, terribly cooked in comparison to previous with my steak over cooked and tough alongside some soggy chips and rude staff. Some staff I recognised but other's I did not. There seems to be a new manager or supervisor there with dark hair and she may say the right things yet the underlying attitude is not welcoming and the way she was with the staff also not good. She may have been having a bad day but if she wasn't then that's one hell of a resting glare. We did not feel welcome, the pub is no longer inviting so for now, till hopefully one day someone can make it back to how it was it is a goodbye to the...
Read moreGood location, clean, well-lit and spacious. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The drinks were fine with a reasonable selection available. Sadly, the Food was not up to scratch and the kitchen was obviously under pressure even though there were not many diners or patrons at the bar... They had run out of ALL Fish by 2:30 pm which was depressing. The 'Piri Piri Chicken' with flatbread was rather disappointing. It was soggy with very little hot flavouring and only a tiny amount of chicken. The 8 Oz Rump steak was very good, cooked to specification. The chips were excellent texture but the portion was too small for a pub meal. Extra cheesy Mac 'N' Cheese tasted rather bland but was still very salty. There was also no chili sauce on offer, despite a personal request for Tabasco. The menu is varied and at the standard of the Greene King chain. Maybe if they slimmed it down more radically, they could focus on improving some core dishes? Naturally, we need to factor in the economic crisis with much increased costs and the labour shortage created by the folly of brexit. However, the Water Tower could do a lot better. We will try again at some point in the...
