14 years Totally loyal customers. Last few times noticed significant demise in quality. As others mentioned.. vegetarian dishes mostly insipid. Decor shabby, staff unkempt and a few quite rude, although younger son of manager mostly nice. Tonight delivery of part of my order, which I paid £3 extra for, was missing. Due to distance and company for dinner, we had no choice but to eat. After guests left I called, whereby a rude manager, who ended up shouting at me, asked me did I want to take the outstanding money I was now owed off my next bill. I said I did not want to use restaurant again as several times I had been unhappy. He then aggressively told me I could come and get the money. I said I was not prepared to drive there and he said then I would have to wait. I said I would like the £3 delivery fee back in addition due to total inconvenience and he shouted at me I should have called straight awaw and waited for a driver to bring the missing food. I explained the food would then all have to be reheated and told him how rude he was. I said he would now lose a lot of custom, he shouted he didn't care. I asked if he was the manager he said ''yes,' by the way my name is Ahmed yeah!'. I told him I want my money back tomorrow. We will see... this place has lost the plot...seemingly they assume they can treat the hand that feeds them with contempt...again..that sort of 'seed sowing' in life may take time to bud...but sooner or later the harvest of it will arrive, just look at the reviews. Rating: rude, stingy, shabby,...
Read moreHave frequented this restaurant for over 20 years. The food was always good, and the staff friendly, but the decor was tired. Maybe that is why it rarely seemed to be busy with customers.
Now under new management and a complete refurbishment. The restaurant looks modern and fresh. The food is as good as it ever was, and in some cases even better than before.
The refurbishment has increased customer interest. Have never seen the place so packed! Due to this, clearly the kitchen was busy, so dinner was ‘relaxed’ but this was understandable. This also led to a couple of mistakes - one piece of chicken tikka was undercooked and had to be sent back, and the onion bhajis tasted nice, but were a bit soggy and oily so probably rushed out by the kitchen. Seems a little bit unfair to mark them down on the food for this, it should really be a 5. But it gives me a chance to improve the score when I next go back!
The mains were excellent. I ate several familiar dishes, all of which were as good as or better than before.
The owner was also very pleasant and engaged and interested in our feedback. See...
Read moreI've been regularly getting takeaways from Shiplu since 2002 and used to consider it one of the best curry shops that I'd been to. Sadly of late it has really gone downhill, and the last takeaway (25/3/18) was bang average, despite my order being one of the first of the evening (5.30pm), they'd got it wrong, resulting to my having to return to the shop to collect the correct order, sometimes things go wrong on a busy Friday / Sat night, but at 5.30pm with an empty restaurant. Very poor.
As for the food, bang average is being very complimentary, the freebie poppadums (given to me as a result of having to return to collect the correct meal) tasted rancid which I suspect could have been the oil they were fried in, the replacement Chicken Madras was very watery (could have been a rush job), and the side dishes were tasteless (Bombay Aloo, Sag Paneer, Cauli Bhaji) and certainly not worth the £60 spent.
Sorry Shiplu, you've been great in the past, but of late the last few curries I've had have been a bit meh. Time to throw away the takeaway menu and find another curry...
