Rye is a small English town located about an hour from London. We were there on a day trip on a blistering day in summer. We were in the mood for a seafood lunch and decided to go to Webbe's which had decent reviews. I had a bottled Cider and my friend had the Prosecco. We decided to have a dish each from the Mains section of the menu. We also ordered a side of Homemade Bread which came with Kentish rapeseed oil. I had the Steamed Panaché of Fish which was a melange of small pieces of fish like Plaice, Salmon, Cod, Mullet, Gurnard and Huss, Prawns and Mussels with Spinach and bits of Potatoes and Carrots in a Saffron Sauce. The plate was flavourful but a bit bland. The taste improved dramatically with the addition of some freshly ground pepper and salt. My friend had the Grilled Hake Fillet. The fish was perfectly grilled and was accompanied with bits of grilled Chorizo, Potatoes and Tomatoes in a Thyme Sauce. The dish was quite exceptional and we loved it! On the whole the meal was quite satisfying and Webbe's is worth a look-in if you ever visit this part of the world and are fond...
Read moreReally mixed feelings. On one hand side beautifully cooked fish - every dish was outstanding in presentation, but some dimension of flavour missing - very flat - missing that “umph”. Pork belly was the dish I was mostly looking forward to - arancini and scallops were delicious but pork belly really dry and yet crispy crackling cover in grave so not really crispy more soggy. Some more acidity in fish and a bit more salt could bring those dishes beautifully together! Service is what let’s this place down. Experience with Host and waitress were so poor that it actually spoiled our visit. We were seated opposite from till and bar and we watched staff “working” for most of our dinner. Our wine wasn’t open by the table, I watched waitress hugging our wine cooler for about 5 minutes before she decided is time to deliver it to our table... it was like watching her in slow motion. We weren’t offer any aperitif, we almost beg for bread and no check back was done. Shame... I’m restaurant manager and I would never treat my...
Read moreDecided to try out this restaurant after some friends recommended this and I definitely would recommend this to others too!
Having made a reservation at mid noon there weren’t too many people when we arrived, the seatings were comfortable being at good distance to each other too.
Ordered 6 Maldon rock oysters to start with and they were really fresh, tender without being overly salty. For mains we had the grilled monkfish from the seasonal special menu, steamed panache with a good selection of seafood (very good value for money too!) and the Rye fish stew which was my favourite during my meal. The soup was filling and flavourful filled with mussels, shrimps, fish and potatoes - served with croutons, Parmesan cheese and rouille sauce.
Though the service was slightly on the slower side it was a lovely meal afterall and perfect to stop by after arriving to Rye on the train before heading out to...
