A really odd, surprising, disappointing experience last night.

We went to the TM for a pint - one of my favourite pubs locally, a fantastic building and usually offering a fine selection of real ales. After being seated under a loudspeaker (emphasis on the loud) a staff member approached and offered to bring a drinks menu; but then, instead, told us verbally what was available. Fair enough; we both wanted a cask ale so didn’t need to see the whole menu. She told us of 3 ales available; much less than usual, but maybe (I thought) this is the current, post-lockdown, normal.

I asked if a specific ale (normally on offer here) was available; no, it isn’t, she stated confidently. I considered the three she’d told us were on, and chose accordingly; not what I’d normally have but beggars can’t be choosers.

I went to the bar to pay - we wanted to move to a table outside (away from the loudspeaker, basically) so pre-payment is a prerequisite. There I noticed a whole range of ales on tap we hadn’t been offered, including the one I’d specifically asked about - so I asked to bring back my untouched drink and exchange for the one I’d asked for.

I might as well have asked to eat their grandmother. The manager said no; I explained I’d asked for this specific drink and been told it wasn’t available, so the staff member was called over and, to my face, denied having said it. The manager looked at me again as though I’d waded through sewage before entering her pub; the barman also clearly thought I was just being a difficult customer.

In the end, I got the drink I wanted, but we went elsewhere for the rest of the evening rather than stay where we are going to be accused of dishonesty. Such a disappointment. I love this pub and would like to keep going; but I got no apology, only aggression from the staff and manager.

I don’t leave a 1 star review lightly and I don’t think this is representative of how it is normally, so I’ll try to leave another review, reflecting our...

This was the pub where i discovered my destiny. I was working in the high street in west/north? Bridgeford. .We were finished for the night.Building a Loungers Cafe/Bar..Anyhoo!. It was a very cold rainy night about 6:30. Christmas was looming. We finished work, as I say and trundled our way up to the pub. Got served and sat down.It was a week day so the place was empty nearly. It was then I found out my future!. The menus on table where of Hungry Horse, Beefeater type. The meals looked nice. They always do.The interior was of a traditional Pub.Oak and Mahogany Beams and staircase. At some stage in the Past accommodation must have been available, but not that night!. Because that was the night I found out my destiny. They sell many types of Ale and Lagers. I had!...Guiness!. Which is a stout.! We huddled around the table in our secret meeting, from prying eyes of the other customers who seemed settled in there comfy chairs. My Foreman/Supervisor. Explained to me where and what was happening, what had been going on ,why he had not been on the job for a few days. "I've got a job working abroad". he aid. "Do want to come with me as a team". "Chuffin right " I said. "when's the flight"... Nice staff.. Only...

Myself and two friends decided to have a spot of lunch here, I’d been in the past and recommended it to them. We ordered a bottle of wine plus other drinks and our meals. drinks arrived, and then shortly after we were told that they had a water leak but they would still bring our meals as they had done them but we would have to leave once we’d finished, Whilst eating they kept coming every two minutes to see if we had finished, the second we put our cutlery down they asked us to go, we said we still have half a bottle of wine, they said take it with you!! They then presented not only the full bill but with two extra drinks on that we hadn’t had, we queried this and they deducted them, we then sat outside on their front to finish our drinks, when we left and one of the staff said something sarcastic we told him that we were disgusted with how they had managed things, they shouldn’t have served the meals to us at all, they obviously still wanted full payment, another female member of staff joined in and they were both very rude, it was a matter of if you don’t like it don’t come...

Poor Food & Unwelcoming Staff. Ordered fish & chips, fish was over cooked & the chips were a kind of standard frozen version. The Bow Buns were dense, dry overcooked skewers & bland crispy squid. We were asked to move half way through our meal from a non reserved table the staff felt no need to intervene so because we have newly moved to the area we only moved to keep the peace. The old women member of staff with glasses had awful customer service & seemed to be bitter towards us for some reason. I had high hopes coming here but I have to say I am very disappointed. Even another customer was embarrassed & approached us to apologise for the awful experience. Unfortunately I would not be returning & I will not recommend the Test Match to anyone.

Steak sandwich was inedible. When I complained at the bar (when I was finally acknowledged) I was met with a “so, I don’t do the cooking” and he tried to walk off….. asked if he would pay £10 for that he responded “no,”… I asked to speak with the manager and was bluntly told “they aren’t in”…. He may be new, he may be on minimum rate but he deserves a massive pay cut… Did speak to the lady in charge, she asked what the issue was, I pointed to the sandwich and she said “I’ll sort it”… she was very very pleasant, helpful and polite. The replacement sandwich was slightly better, but my appetite had gone. Oh and the fries didn’t make it back

As a transplant resident from the US, this is my favourite traditional pub in West Bridgford. The atmosphere is quaint, comfortable, and traditional. Bar is well supplied with local ales and if there is a match on, there is a huge projection screen in the back. Definitely worth a visit.
