After reading many reviews raving about the Haweli, and similarly word of mouth from various people around Bearwood, my partner and I thought we would try it, having tried many of the curry houses in Bearwood before, but not this one.
Whenever trying a new curry house I always order a Pathia, as I find it a good yardstick to measure them by, they (Pathia's) are generally medium hot+ and sweet and sour. My partner had cauliflower bhaji as a main dish.
Giving the number of good reviews, my mouth was watering in anticipation of its arrial. (we ordered for home delivery) What arrived (upon tasting it) was not a pathia. I am completely bemused as to what can have happened as I have extensive experience with currys and (as mentioned before) pathia's and what I ended up eating half of was a very hot (spicy) generic curry. ???? There was no indication of anything sweet nor sour about the whole thing, just hot.
Sufficed to say, I am unlikely to be rushing to try them again and giving the reviews I felt a little robbed.... Not sure what could have happened for them to have gotten a dish I know well, so markedly different to everyone elses take on recipe,,, unless there happened to have been a cock up in the kitchen and somewhere else in Bearwood someone else had ordered a madras+ chicken curry and was equally as bemused as I about what they ended...

Read moreLook, curry is a personal thing, what I like some won't but, if you like authentic, rich & well cooked Indian food then Hawali is the local go to place.
I've been eating here for more years than my waistline cares to remember and it is still at the top of the list of local restaurants serving authentic food.
The tarka dal is still what I judge every other restaurant by, the chicken jalfrezi is superb and, when I am feeling brave the mutton vindaloo is just amazing. Be warned though, it is hot :)
Our kids have grown up with Haweli and have eaten all over and still love the food. The place is relaxed, the staff are super friendly and it is a pleasure to eat in or call for a take away.
They say that you settle into a restaurant, get used to the the food and forgive them if it is not up to standard but trust me, Haweli always seems to deliver on...
