I recently came to An Taigh Cèilidh entirely by chance whilst visiting Stornoway for work. This place completely blew me away with its warm and welcoming atmosphere! I love Gaelic (although sadly I do not speak it) and I was encouraged and supported to use Gaelic at An Taigh Cèilidh - by my second visit I was greeting everyone with "feasgar math"! I know a fair bit of Welsh, and to my astonishment, Tearlach (the "man of the house" and mastermind behind the An Taigh Cèilidh enterprise) spoke fluent Welsh as well as Gaelic! The place is so lovely, it just felt like coming home, and I didn't want to leave. If you are in Stornoway, please pay An Taigh Cèilidh a visit. You will be supporting a unique not-for-profit venue that is truly the heart of the community. Tearlach's passion for Gaelic language and culture really shines through. And Daibhi will make you the best coffee you've ever tasted! Taing mhor, An Taigh Cèilidh. I miss you already, and can't...
Read moreWe heard about An Taigh Ceilidh on our visit to Lewis and went there for a coffee. It is encouraged to speak and order in Gaelic but as non Gaelic speakers we were taught simple phrases to order. Both of the staff were very nice and welcoming and spoke with us immediately, eager to hear what brought us to Lewis and our journey. When I mentioned that I was looking for a Bible published in Gaelic to add to a German Bible museum collection, Taerlach from An Taigh Ceilidh went through great lengths and donated three beautiful Gaelic bibles to go to the museum collection. A trip to An Taigh Ceilidh is a great experience if you want to learn more about the scots Gaelic language and culture with seriously good coffee and very warm, helpful and inclusive staff. Thanks for a...
Read moreAbsolutely loved the place. Amazing coffee (nothing that we later tried in Edinburgh was quite as good) and a great place to learn about the local culture and hear spoken Gaelic. I was intimidated at first - feeling inadequate with my limited Duolingo level of the language but the owner was very welcoming and I left feeling encouraged and understanding more about life on Lewis. Highly recommend! Tapadh leibh agus deagh fhortan leis a’ phròiseact...
