Went in to Brodie’s and had lunch. Order was taken quickly. We ordered coffees and a meal and asked to have the drinks right away and not with the meal. After 35 minutes I asked again if we could have the coffee, as I had seen a number of different groups of people enter after us and and receive both drinks and meals. I got the response “you’ll just have to wait in line for your order” in the most rude and patronising tone. This spoken in a way to be a spectacle to those around us. Clearly this was not true by how others were being served and the fact I had watch three members of staff standing around laughing and chatting for ten minutes without doing anything at all. Both of us perceived that we received differential treatment because we have don’t have Scottish accents and we’re thought of as non-locals. We live within ten minutes and were trying Brodie’s for the first time because we wanted somewhere in addition to go regularly for lunch. The food wasn’t that great so it’s no loss really. I can’t imagine Brodie’s would manage to stay open in a town with a more competitive environment.
Update: I believe it was the 31st March. We told a different staff member about how we felt and they apologised. But we still said we wouldn’t be coming back. There were three people who appeared to be staff that day and were serving. As for the accent comment, we felt that it was how we were perceived resulted in our treatment (that we would not be repeat customers so we were unimportant - this should not be the case either!). Accent is an obvious factor but there are many others. It is some time after our visit that I wrote this review and it was because I gave it time for reflection. I hope you can draw some positive conclusions from my comments. Moffat is a lovely place to be for those who live here and those who visit and having thriving local businesses is important...
Read moreWe were staying at MacIntyre Lodge nearby and wanted to find a place to have dinner and spend the evening. Brodies was recommended to us by our host and we're so glad we went. We made a last minute booking a few hours beforehand.
When we arrived we were seated in the adjacent lounge to browse the menu and order drinks. They have a fantastic gin and cocktail menu with a vast array of unique and new gins and liqueurs. The décor in the lounge was a perfect combination of comfy, mismatched furniture all beautifully reupholstered in stylish and colourful tweeds. Like being at your very trendy Granny's!
Once our food was ready we were invited to our table next to the window in the dining area of the restaurant. Our meal was top notch - so good we forgot to get photos of our mains! My husband loved the venison, and I loved my steak. Our desserts were also delicious. Michael loved his sweet potato pie with nutmeg ice cream and I loved my spiced rice pudding with pear.
After our meal we went back through to the lounge for a few more drinks. The staff were great in making recommendations for things to try, and Danyella even went to the trouble of making a batch of sugar syrup to be able to make an espresso martini when I asked for one even though it wasn't even on the menu!
We had such a lovely evening and would thoroughly recommend Brodies to anyone - locals and...
