We live locally and had used Olive a couple of times when it opened as take away during the pandemic. That was fine enough. My first sit-in experience was when I took my mum in for some lunch, only to find out they didnt offer food, so we settled for a bit of cake. Turns out their "cakes" were actually bought in, plastic-wrapped sponge cakes from a shop somewhere. Decided to give it another go with my fiance yesterday and we were really disappointed. We didnt even get acknowledged when we walked in, despite there being about 5 or 6 staff present. We waited then eventually got shown to a table. Then we waited again, then waited some more before a menu was brought to us. The menu is very limited and offers a very "green and clean" range of foods - no sandwiches, soup or even bacon rolls to be seen. Once again we waited and we waited. The couple sitting behind us were also being ignored, so got up and left. Eventually our order was taken - 2 hot drinks and 2 cakes - nothing strenuous. Unbelievably, after another painfully long wait, my hot chocolate arrived on its own...in a small tumbler-style glass with no handle? After another 5 or 6 minutes, my partners coffee arrived - but no cake. When I tried to get someones attention, I noticed 4 of the 6 members of staff trying to operate the coffee machine and the other 2 tucked behind a counted trying to cut cake TOGETHER? Queue another awkwardly long wait and me trying to not finish my abnormally small hot chocolate too quickly. When the cakes did arrive they were definitely homemade this time (thank god) and were nice in size and taste. When we finished up, I tried to figure out how we were to pay and I was told to go over to their till, where I was then asked what we had? Odd? £11 bill, not extravagant but I couldnt help but notice that I was charged £2.80 for my hot chocolate? The same price you're charged for a small hot chocolate at Costa and its atleast twice the size! Anyway, for a place of such lovely decor and massive potential, we were really let down and have decided to steer clear in the future. Maybe if they actually worked out a system for their service and utilised their staff better, that wouldn't...
Read moreWhat an incredible experience, we stopped here on our way out of town and were very pleased to find the welcoming, modern, and warm interior of Olive. My wife and I love eating healthy and fresh so, when we were presented with the house specialty avocado toast we were blown away. Fresh vegetables and guacamole covered a perfectly toasted piece of sourdough, the addition of a grilled lime wedge which we were told to drizzle over top made the flavors explode as well! In addition, opted to add a salad which we assumed would be fresh greens and a simple dressing but found lush peppers, carrots, raspberries and greens in a hefty bowl loaded with seeds and a house made creamy dressing garnished with a dollop of hummus, delish! We love our coffee and always look for a place with a good espresso machine in front because it usually means that the coffee is good too.. we were right, we each ordered an oat milk flat white and the espresso was pulled perfectly.
Not only was the food and drink great but there’s also a lovely shop in the back called Pomegranate which we loved because it carried natural and local health products as well as some clothing items and supplements, definitely check it out.
Needless to say this place is great for fresh and unique spins on over done dishes, highly recommend this...
Read moreWe were looking forward to our visit here.
We were shown to our table with indifference, and asked for our order. We decided to opt for Americano coffee, and a chicken burger each which arrived with crisps and a small salad. Having negotiated my way through the crisps and salad (the food was served on those horrible planks of wood), I discovered that my chicken breast was bright red and uncooked inside. My partner's burger was identically under cooked.
We called a member of staff over, who then called someone from the kitchen. The man was incincere, unapologetic, and abrupt in his manner, and simply stated that the cost of the meal would be deducted from the final bill. We got up and before leaving went to counter to pay. We were asked to pay for the two coffees and one chicken burger, which I refused on the grounds that it was also red inside. We left having paid £6.80 for two coffees. The service here is abysmal, and the staff require immediate training in basic customer service. This happend on 20 June at approximately 13:00-14:23 when we paid the bill.
Due to the lack of any real concern, and the risk of food poisoning, I have referred the incident to the Caithness Environmental Health Department. Do not visit this establishment and the staff are rude, and the food...
