To begin with, we live in Glasgow now after a lifetime in East Texas, with tons of gumbo and sweet tea, and even honeymooned in NOLA. After a trip back earlier this year I brought Lipton iced tea bags, grits, and Tony's back in my suitcase. So when we heard about NOLA-soul we were extremely intrigued (we still can't get a decent taco or enchilada here).
If you want to dine-in, make a reservation. The 4 tables are taller with stools (no baby high chairs but we're used to holding our 4 month old who isn't happy sitting in a car seat or non- moving stroller) and the food preparation area is out in the open!
We started with fried okra- it was really cooked to perfection and was exactly perfect- and the hardest part- it wasn't slimy at all! The shrimp and grits were very good with all the correct spices but made with yellow corn instead of an imported white hominy (we are in Scotland, not the South afterall). We tried both the gumbo and the vegan gumbo. The gumbo was better than I'd expected but I just needed a little Crystal hot sauce (again, something we expected since only Leah Chase's gumbo meets our desires). We had biscuits with a side of gravy, and were the best I've had in a restaurant here (my gravy is better, lol). We also had ice tea, but it was more like an Arnold Palmer with added spices- we enjoyed it but I wouldn't call it iced tea.
We ended our meal with beignets, that tasted straight out of Cafe du Monde, and the only thing missing was chicory coffee.
The service couldn't be beat, the guys were really enjoyable and we'll...
Read moreWe visited this small and cozy soul food spot, and I’m really glad we made a reservation as they suggested when we called ahead. The atmosphere was cute, and the service was excellent—the staff was incredibly kind and apologetic about the wait, even though there were only three tables dining in while most customers were picking up takeout orders.
I ordered the gumbo with chicken and okra. When I asked about the ingredients, the server let me know that the sausage wasn’t Halal and kindly offered to add more chicken as a substitute, which I really appreciated. The gumbo had a nice homestyle touch, though I personally prefer a deeper, more seasoned flavor like I’m used to from back home. It was still a comforting dish, but I was hoping for a bit more of that bold, spicy kick.
On the other hand, the wings were a standout. The lemon pepper with buffalo sauce was absolutely amazing and packed with flavor!
Overall, it was a pleasant experience with great service and fair pricing. While the gumbo wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, I still enjoyed...
Read moreWe saw Nola Soul on Instagram and enjoyed reading about the creation of the different dishes. It is clear these guys are passionate about using fresh produce, preparing the dishes from scratch and giving a lot of Love, time and thought to the food made. We had the chicken burger, fries, fried Okra and also out of curiosity we tried the shrimp and grits. The chicken burger was really tender with a beautiful crunchy coating, really delicious. The bowl of fries were hot and crispy. We had never tried okra before and they were very tasty with their light coating, perfect with the side dip. The shrimp and grits was a bowl of comfort. We sat on the large bench and table outside with our food accompanied by some great tasting homemade ice tea. Lucky we had a small space for the dessert of beignets and chocolate ganache! What a great meal. These guys are doing a great thing here. The food is delicious and the service is very friendly. Keep up...
