Richmond House in Fort Augustus may be small and tucked away, but it delivers big on flavor and hospitality—arguably some of the best Chinese food we’ve had anywhere in the world.
From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly accommodating. Despite our daughters bringing in takeaway fish and chips from another spot, the team welcomed them to dine with us indoors to escape the cold. It’s a gesture we won’t forget, and one that perfectly captures the warmth and generosity we experienced across Scotland.
Not only did they dispose of our extra trash without hesitation, but they also offered us a hearty portion of sweet corn soup to share—on the house. It was the first place during our trip that served the hot chili oil we absolutely crave, and they nailed the spice level perfectly: bold and flavorful without overwhelming the dish.
The Szechuan chicken, chicken fried rice, and chow mein were simply outstanding—every bite was bursting with flavor and cooked just right. Add to that their speedy service and friendly smiles, and it felt like dining at a top-tier restaurant in a big city, not a small town.
This little spot is proof that great food and heartfelt service can be found in the most unexpected places. Richmond House is a true hidden gem, and one we’d return to in...
Read moreWe saw the bad reviews at this place and thought that we could give them a second chance as we love Asian food. We are so disappointed.
We ordered 3 items: Wonton noodles + “King” Prawn noodles and Combination Szechuan stir fry + 2 water = £48.
The food is not expensive if you don’t look at the photos and see how little meat they put in each dish. Wonton noodle soup has 4-5 very tiny pieces of wonton, the soup is bland. “King” prawn noodles come with 4-5 tiny shrimps (you can see in the photos). It’s not King prawn at all. Both soup items taste like water and mushy noodles.
The Sezchuan stir fry has very little slices of meat. We asked the manager if this is correct item because we ordered “combination”. She said “yes, we put 3 slices of beef, 3 slices of chicken and 3 slices of pork and 1 shrimp”. Remember, it is just thin slices. This is £15 dish that has no value at all. One of the pork slices has a very bad flavor like an old meat.
We could not finish our meal at all and the photos you see are what we left on the table when we checked out. We had to go to another restaurant to restart our dinner.
We hardly write bad reviews for business as we respected hardworking restauranteurs but this restaurant...
Read moreI don't understand why this restaurant got such bad reviews. If you are like me, I would read all reviews and decide who I am going to believe. We are Chinese from Australia and missed Chinese foods after embarking on a Great Britain and Ireland tour. However, we know how back home, we will never go to Chinese restaurants in country towns as they cater for the Caucasian palates. So, here we are in Fort Augustus after doing the Loch Ness cruise when we found out that almost every eating place is closed. Even the fish & chips restaurant which was highly recommended by our tour guide. Then, we saw this restaurant. We saw some other Chinese travellers from our tour dining in. We checked to see if the food is edible and they assured us that the food is good. We took away the hot & sour soup and beef chow mein. After days of pies & sandwiches, the lunch on the coach was the best meal! The hot & sour soup was very tasty & generous with ingredients. The beef chow mein had excellent 'wok hei' (fragrance of the...
