The ThingsThe Things
Nestled in a charming little town by the shores of Loch Ness, The Moorings Restaurant offers a convenient spot for a quick bite. I decided to try the iconic British dish, fish and chips, and opted for takeaway to enjoy the meal by the scenic lake. The service was fast, which suited my plan to enjoy the outdoors. The fish was the standout feature: a massive, generous portion that left me full not just for the day but well into the next morning. The freshness of the fish was evident, though it was a bit too oily, still swimming in grease when served. The chips, on the other hand, were nothing extraordinary—classic but lacking the freshness of the fish. The location itself is quite convenient, away from the more tourist-heavy parts of the village, offering a quieter dining experience. While the restaurant's atmosphere is functional, the staff seemed a bit unapproachable, their expressions leaving something to be desired in terms of hospitality. Overall, The Moorings Restaurant is a solid choice if you’re looking for a quick and filling meal near Loch Ness, especially if you prioritize convenience and proximity to the lake over a polished dining experience.

Despite the negative reviews here, I think this place was quite good. Maybe if you order the traditional food and expect great traditional Scottish food you'll be disappointed but if you order other stuff like we did, you'll love it. I got the Special of the day - Grilled Sea Bass. This was an amazing alternative to the damn fish and chips we see everywhere. The sea bass was moist and tender, and it was on a bed of roasted vegetables, which we desperately craved after many days of just fried food. We also got the Turkish salad which was a very refreshing mix of cucumber, dill, tomato and onions. Though it was a bit too liquidy, the overall taste was great bc of its tanginess and freshness. We also got the BBQ ribs which also had great flavor.

One of the best restaurants we visited during our Scotland highland Trip. We were recommended monsters fish and chips but due to rain decided to soak in the vibe of this small town and luckily saw sign of this place from Loch Ness after the small bridge. The ambiance, food, staff everything was top notch . Staff catered my request of xtra spicy food and gave Tabasco and red chillies(just in case as in UK we experienced the worst bland food)Food was served fresh piping hot with great flavours . Portion was quite large. The Haddock was really good with fries and tartar sauce+salad . vegetarian platter was also delicious.Great work team Moorings… A must to eat at if visiting Loch Ness.

CAUTION STAY AWAY.

When we first entered the restaurant, based on reasonable prices and vegetarian options (in comparison to other restaurants in town), we had to seat ourselves because the waiter was too busy scowling into the distance to even notice us. After we got his attention, he gathered up some filthy menus and literally threw them at us. As other commenters have pointed out, we initially thought the waiter was perhaps joking around or acting sarcastically, but he followed up this class act by refusing to explain what any of the unfamiliar dishes may contain -- instead storming off mid sentence to consult with the equally surly manager. Neither of them could tell us what was in their moussaka.. we did not know what that dish was, and we're inquiring such simple questions as "what is moussaka? does it contain cheese?" To which both the server and manager had no idea.. In fact, retorted that moussaka is an English word (turns out it's actually Greek..), and that "oh, we could put cheese on that if you like" (turns out moussaka typically features a lot of cheese).

The food, when finally delivered, was served in aluminum containers (the kind used for reheating frozen dinners), and were so hot we could barely touch them to see what it was we had ordered. The "vegetable curry" turned out to be a few sodden and partially melted cauliflower and mushroom chunks in about two inches of gelatinous, oily syrup.. we're still not sure whether we got the right dish at all..

In an attempt to endure the dismal quality of our "food", I ordered a tennants, which the menu indicated was on tap. I saw the guy crack a can in front of me! It was lukewarm!!

Finally, as a grad finally, I tried to pass my rapidly liquefying bowels in the toilet, but the overhead light was broken and did not illuminate the room at all! The horrid stench that filled the room prior to my entry filled me in on what I was missing.

I would give this restaurant a 0/5 for every aspect of the experience. It is a god awful mess and I hope you do not get the misfortune of eating here. Seriously I don't get how it was this bad.. how In the heck are people giving this place more than one star, they must work there.. I watched an old man grimace his way through pinkish slime on a dinner roll, perhaps related to the seafood family?? That man is probably in the morgue being autopsied as I write.. hopefully they figure out how he died so as to shut this hell hole down. If I could give you one bit of life advice, is follow Nessie's lead and eat plankton out of the Loch instead!

In the words of my girlfriend who suffered through this with me, "at least I'm not...

We were terribly wrong about not checking the reviews on this restaurant when our tour guide of an excursion trip we booked recommended this restaurant to us. I asked the staff what single and double hamburgers mean. Does single mean one slice of meat and double mean two slices of meat? or one hamburger and two hamburgers.

Without first answering my question, the waiter asked me where I'm from. The waiter turned around and said: can you translate for me, this guy cant speak English. Please tell him single is one hamburger and double is two hamburgers.

I was thinking WHOA. He is so arrogant and judgemental! I just wanted to clarify does double means two hamburgers or two pieces of meat patty (I know the question was a bit silly but that's not the point...) I ordered a double hamburger, and when the hamburger came, the hamburger has two pieces of meat and not two hamburgers.

Putting the miscommunication aside, when I tried asking for clarification, he grabbed my burger and stick his pencil on the piece of meat, saying: 'One hamburger and two hamburgers!'

That attitude was rude. Absolutely disgusting! Long story short, the manager came to my table and told me either they bin the burgers and give me a refund or I could separate my 'double burger' into two 'single' burgers and pay the price of a double hamburger. I didnt want to waste the food so I said yeah go on, two 'single' burgers for the price of one double burger then. (their fault for not explaining it properly)

When I pay at the till, the manager asked me to pay for two single hamburgers. But I said just now you said I only need to pay for the price of one double hamburger. He said, no, you ate two single hamburgers so you have to pay for them. Please pay it now.

I was silly for asking that question in the first place. Could have totally avoided this scene if I know it is the least recommended restaurant on Trip Advisor in Loch Ness. Rude, unhelpful, racist, and unprofessional manager. I took time to type this out because I hope no one will encounter such experience like mine. Let the good restaurants prosper and shut the...

WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER

Myself, partner and children ages 1 and 8 came for lunch on Tuesday 19th July 2022

We ordered chicken wings, calamari, fish combo with chips and a side portion of chips to share between us all. When ordering we asked if we could get cheese on both of the chips and could the cheese be melted please. We were told this was not a problem and awaited our order.

Unfortunately there was a bit of a wait for all our food to arrive at the same time the wings and calamari and side portion of cheesy chips arrived first. We tried the dishes and the calami was not fresh, rubbery, and the batter was stogy, wings were dry and lacking in flavour.

Eventually our fish combo arrived but was with a cheesy jacket potato not cheesy chips. I told the waiter that the order was wrong he questioned me and said no he had thought I said jacket potato. He took the dish and returned with chips and cold hard grated cheeses on top of them.

When I asked if the cheese could be melted please like the first portion of chips had arrived and as was originally requested the waiter said no as there was other food on the plate that would become over cooked.

I suggested to him that perhaps the chips could be put in a separate bowl and then the cheese could be melted as this was how our first portion was prepared.

This is when the waiter become confrontational and said no he could not correct my order and that I was making him rush too much.

I was speechless and intimidated in such an unwanted awkward situation. I said ok to the waiter and told my family to get up and leave to avoid further arguments with the waiter.

What little we tried of the food was inedible and we were refused to be given our correct order. The waiter continued to shout at us as we were leaving saying that we were not nice and that we needed to pay for the food before we left (Even though we had not ate the food and that the order was incorrect)

This is by far the worst service I’ve ever had, food was subpar, all frozen and fried and highly priced. Would avoid this restaurant...
