Visited the Cheshire Line on a Sunday and Monday in early June. We were looking for dog friendly pubs in Southport and our Doggy Pubs app listed this as one. It was also close to where we were staying at the Caravan & Motorhome Club site. The pub is not on the main shopping street but one street back. Well we were very pleasantly surprised. Its advertised as the oldest pub in Southport and the building definitely supports this claim. There is a small front yard with a few tables and inside is mostly open plan with a slightly separated small area to the left of the entrance. This area and the one to the right of the entrance is what I would call the snugs, casual drinking areas with small round tables. Further in and you come to the dining area with larger tables and comfy padded bench seating along the walls. Throughout there are photos and signs depicting the old railway that the pub is named after. There is also a lovely "hidden" courtyard beer garden. This is obviously a favorite place for the locals to gather and everyone we met was very friendly. At the time of visiting they had a selection of real ales and lager as well as stout and mild on tap. On Sunday we had the Sunday roast, which was nicely cooked, but it was on the Monday when we took my parents that the food really impressed. My wife an I had the Katsu chicken burger from the specials board, two breaded chicken fillets covered in a sweet curry sauce, in a beetroot coloured bun and old fashioned chips. We both agreed they were delicious and we learned the chef was trying them out before officially adding them to the main menu. My parents had the fish and chips and the liver and onions and both said it was the best they had had in a long while. Whatever the Landlady and chef are doing, they are doing it right, and whenever we are in Southport, we we definitely be calling back in to...

Read moreI'm leaving this review out of disappointment I'm afraid on how the situation was handled. I had a vegetarian 'nut roast' Sunday lunch. The gravy was like water and tasteless, no Yorkshire pudding? Are they not vegetarian now? Frozen roast potatoes? Come on, borderline raw veg, and the nut roast? Some half hacked looked like fried rice and gravy in the shape of an upside down bowl with some nuts scattered in top, truly awful. I did get overheard making the observations so a staff member collected the plate and apologised, but to say I didn't eat most of it, I still got charged and didn't want to argue in front of the regulars, hence this review. I have had a fabulous Sunday lunch elsewhere in Southport so keep looking...
