I'll start by saying the staff were lovely, no issues with service whatsoever. That's the only highlight however.
Starter platter was average, seemed to be bog standard frozen spring rolls and the like deep fried and thrown on a dish. OK though I suppose.
Crispy duck pancakes were fine, however the cucumber/spring onion that came with them - the cucumber was physically slimy and looked like it had been left out in the heat for the afternoon it tasted sour and was clearly not fresh.
Main course we had 2 sizzling beef platters one Cantonese one black bean with peppers etc, Cantonese was just like beef coated in syrup no taste outside of that, black bean was nice according to my partner. The rice was tasty too.
Dessert he had ice cream and I had lychee, as soon as I tasted the lychee I could tell it was gone off - it was fizzy and tasted like vinegar, disappointing really, and only hoping I don't wake up with food poisoning tomorrow as this and the cucumber made me wonder about the rest of the food too.
The atmosphere was terrible, there was a large group of women celebrating a birthday but their karaoke was turned up that loudly I couldn't even hear my partner talking to me when he was sitting next to me, there were other couples around us, including older couples who said it was awful and one table even asked for their food to go, glad to hear people having a nice time and celebrating but not everyone in the restaurant wants to have to shout to their partner to be able to talk over swearing every other word and awful singing.
Overall we will definitely not be returning, food was just not good at all for the £70 we spent, shame as it was a very rare...
Read moreJust the best Chinese in Southport by miles, with the most amazing host and owner! We made sure we made Chinese New year, we missed it last year, and my in laws wanted to try a Chinese new year in Southport. They have been to Chinese New year celebrations in London and different places and said this was a fantastic fun evening.
Wendy and her team are amazing! They are fantastic if you are gluten free to! I’m gluten free and more carnivore and there fantastic. But we know are friends who are vegan come regularly to. So they can accommodate for all.
Every time we have been the atmosphere is fantastic. You feel more like friends!
And unlike some other Chinese restaurants you don’t feel bloated or poorly after. We can’t recommend enough!
We had a bottle of red and a bottle of champagne and the 5 corses and some drinks! 4 people was about £250, which is more than reasonable!! Which included a raffle, to win some Chinese new year gifts! And karaoke at the end of the night!
We don’t think New china gets the recommendation it deserves ! X
We took videos not to many pictures but have added some of the fun of the Chinese New year celebrations with...
Read moreWent with Family for dinner - 9 of us together. Excellent service, fabulous food -- authentic Cantonese, almost "better than the original" in Hong Kong! (I say "almost" cuz ya just can't beat 100% authentic "at home" in HK..) The (salt & pepper) ribs are large! very tasty, and were a delight. We shared some of our favourite dishes: beef hor-fun (rice noodle), a chow-mein (fried noodle) dish, and a Yeung Chow fried rice, with a side of veggies (bak choi & choi saam). My niece & I also had the sweetcorn & chicken soup to start. All portions were generous and very tasty. To cap it all off, we had Chinese-style "toffee apple" -- if you've never had this, I recommend you treat yourself! It's NOT a candied-apple-on-a-stick! Apple halves are encased in sweetness, drizzled with a scattering of sesame seeds (like a Big Mac bun), and served at table. The server DUNKS the still-freshly-hot portion into iced water, then onto your plate. CAREFUL - the apple inside is STILL HOT! Enjoy -- it...
