Very sad to be writing this review. Last September we found Charlieās and were so happy we spotted such a cute little gem of a cafe , food and service so good that we actually revisited three times . However coming back it was a completely different experience and something I have to mention. We are staying at Bude this time and travelled just to visit Charlieās for breakfast after a pleasant dog walk . However the weather was a lot less kind this time as expected in mid March . We politely asked if we could possibly eat inside but was sternly told that we had to sit outside as no dogs were allowed inside. The cafe was empty apart from two people. We sat outside in the freezing cold , it seemed ridiculous and made us feel extremely unwelcome. Our dogs are better behaved than most children, what seemed more bizarre was that two or three people trickled in to visit the cafe with their dogs but got told again that the dogs were only allowed outside , two of these people left and went elsewhere. Thinking back we should of went somewhere else as it was far too uncomfortable but felt defeated as we made a special trip to Charlieās . We completely understand that itās up to the discretion of the cafe to be dog friendly or not but please build some kind of shelter , box of blankets or install small none intrusive heat lamps to allow some comfort at least . As the weather got worse we just wanted to leave before our food was even served as we also felt terribly sorry for our poor dogs. Not sure we will revisit...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhat a super cafe with seats inside, carefully placed, and outside for the warmer weather, which we had for the one day, Thurs 1 October! Covid measures were spot on and so was the Track+Testing QR codes(with printed sheets, if not). All service at the table.
I popped in first of all for a takeaway Americano, but staff were so welcoming, kind and helpful re parking and much more that I returned to eat at Charlie's after my Tintagel Castle visit. I waited at the entrance while a table etc was sanitised then was brought my 2 warm, lush cheese scones with homemade fruity chutney, served with a delightful Earl Grey tea. Good value too! Staff were very efficient, polite and professional, responding to numerous requests from a range of customers at the tables! I warmly recommend Charlie's for lunch, a drink, snacks and wraps and of course delicious sweet scones in the copious Afternoon Tea plus their own jam! (served with whichever drink you want.) Go for it after a lovely but long castle visit or shopping in the quirky, quaint village! Not to be missed!! Many thanks, milles mercies e grazie mille! Maggie Constable I'll be back, as Arnie so...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA glorious little cafe with a brilliantly warm welcome and some delicious things to eat and drink. We stopped in for a traditional cream tea and we're blown away by the yummyness of the fresh scones, jam and cream. On first look we thought the scones might be on the small side, but, they were PERFECT. A simple but brilliant touch was the provision of a caddy for my wife's used tea bag. A great little thought that you don't see often and it was very nice. Licensed with a great menu of snacks and meals the friendly atmosphere and staff cannot be rivalled, staff were consistently warm and polite providing everything we could want with plenty of (mask covered) smiles. The local gin (Tarquins) is served here and is stunning. Served with Cornish tonic it is the perfect combination and was sublime. So much so, we bagged a bottle and some of the tonic while there. A lovely little place with easy access in the centre of the village, shop stuffed with local delicacies such as cheeses, beers, gins and a lot more. On site bathrooms and a very well conducted covid measures. Stop by, you will NOT be...
