We have recently moved to Westward Ho! and our first night in our new home was a bitterly cold, windy night and neither of us were looking to start cooking! The Golden Fry was the only place open at the beginning of January for takeaway and they didn't disappoint!
The batter used on their fish is one of the best I have ever had. Ask yourself this question - How often do you go to the chippy and look at that mouth watering piece of fish as it sits there fresh out of the fryer, only to get home and find that the batter has gone soggy and you have that layer of 'sludge' between the fish and the outside of the batter?
Not here!! We got home and to my surprise the fish still had a crispy batter and no layer of that 'sludge' that is like uncooked batter. My partner can't eat too much batter as it makes her feel ill so she had a pie and chips, but was also very surprised at the quality of the batter after she had pinched some of mine!
I am so happy that we have a properly good fish and chip shop just down the road, been here several times now and had a variety of things.
Any bad review of this place has to be taken with a pinch of salt! After all, if you don't get the perfect fish and chips in the middle of August then boo hoo! This is not a fast food chain!
For your locals, The Golden Fry is proper good so please don't change. Looking forward to many more enjoyable takeaways, especially when the weather gets warmer and we can enjoy them on the beach as...
Read moreWas looking forward to sampling the fish from this shop but was disappointed after tasting ammonia, which is basically old fish, may have been a one off due to poor stock rotation, didn’t say anything at the time as to be honest I was very hungry but days after telling my wife I didn’t want to eat there again, she too had the same experience but didn’t want to say anything due to the occasion and she put it down to a cleaning agent that may have cross contaminated the fish during the preparation. I have since spoken to a very experienced fish monger who confirmed its fish that is on the turn and basically breaking down, it would cause much harm but would give off a foul taste and smell, hence the reason to smell fresh fish before you buy it... suppose if you ask a fryer to smell the fish and they get funny, you should just walk away. I have a two star as I did eat it without a reaction, to be fair to the Golden Fry, if I returned it at the time I’m sure they woukd have replaced or refunded the purchase, Just be careful people and challenge poor...
Read moreStaying locally we opted for a visit to the local chip shop - the Atlantic Bay. The place was very busy, and you can order via self-serve kiosk thing. We picked what we wanted and the kiosk was fairly easy to use (we couldn't find the curry sauce until we realised you could swipe up to move screen!) We also then had to go to counter anyway as the receipt didn't appear to give our order number! We had a few minutes wait, but this wasn't surprising considering how busy it was.
It's a small area with a covered area outside and some benches on other side of the road. There is also a big green on other side of the road so if it's a nice day you could just sit and eat there!
We had a large cod, chips and peas meal deal, a kids fish cake meal and a small cod and chips. All the food was cooked well, the fish wasn't overly battered, the chips had a good mix of having the little crunchy bits at bottom that I like - and all of it was well covered in salt and vinegar!
We would certainly visit again if the desire for fish and...
