The Elephant and castle is a well known traditional pub which is popular with locals, and so it's all the more surprising to find the rooms upstairs have been refurbished to the standards of a boutique hotel. The room we stayed in was very good. But the service is lacking in some ways. For example we asked for two single duvets of different tog ratings to suit our different sleep needs. But we found one 14 tog duvet covering the super king bed, which caused one of us to overheat dreadfully in the too-hot room. Sure, this is a matter of individual preference, but it shows where service here isn't up to the standard of the rooms. In addition, there was almost no toilet paper in our bathroom when we arrived, so we chose to buy some rather than speak to the barman about this. There's no breakfast available here, and no evening meal provision. None of this need stop you booking here, but just be aware that you may not get the level of service you would in a hotel. In fairness, the location is very convenient, the bed very comfortable, the room tastefully decorated, the bathroom good, if small, and the shower clean...
Read more4 ladies out celebrating a 57th birthday when we entered and went to the bar the young bar staff said she was unable to serve us due to an issue. We then got escorted out of the pub by the bouncer (who looked uncomfortable by doing so) and he explained there was an issue with our group. (This group was all aged between 57-60+ and certainly no threat or harm) entered the pub by calmly walking in. Unsure if this was mistaken identity or if they simply didn't want the older generation in the pub on a Saturday night? I sent a messaged to the pub asking for an explanation as to why this happened but unfortunately no reply. It was a very bad experience and if you want a nice drink and to be served there are plenty of other local pubs in wakefield who treat people with...
Read moreVisited whilst in area following report on Micrpub Adventures site. Historic pub with fine glazed tile exterior including "Windsor Ales" logo. Modern open interior with TVs featuring Sky Sports. Full range of "Eurofizz" largers however, only one hand pumped real ale on offer - local Ossett Brewey "White Rat". Unfortunately this fine, heavily hopped ale did not reflect it's character. Obviously too long in the pipe and showing signs of age with it's acidic finish and slight cloudiness. Wouldn't pass for more than 2/3 in the CAMRA Beer Tasting notes Only redeeming feature was the (July 2024)...
