A really mixed experience, making this a hard review to write especially with the context of less than Ā£70 each night B&B ||Check in was quite straight forward and we were shown up to our room which was nice. Didnāt expect to be asked what time we would be down for breakfast he next morning or to have to choose what we would eat, although an easy choice as limited options. Asked for options to park as the pay and display round the corner was very expensive (Ā£14 for 12 hours I think) and none were offered but as soon as we went for a wander found several places that we could have parked overnight for free, just needed the car moving by 9am which we were happy to do, used this option on the second night and parked 100m away for free! ||The room was the biggest issue. It was incredibly small, the only furniture was a standard double bed! No chest of drawers, wardrobe, desk ... a small corner shelf at one side of the bed, nothing at the other. A deep set window sill was used for a tea / coffee tray - which was well stocked. The paint work was marked and chipped and cheap carpet. The bed was very high which worked well as bags and cases could be slid underneath, there was literally no floor space in the room. The mattress and pillows were comfy and all was clean but the bed squeaked terribly every time you moved in it. ||The bathroom was very basic and barely functional, the shower head fixture was broken, no towel hooks or rail to put towels to dry, no shelf for toiletries and tiny sink with no space (unable to fill kettle in sink had to use drinking glass instead). There were some basic toiletries provided and 4 towels which smelt fresh but were mismatched and small. ||By far the biggest problem with the room was the plumbing, whenever a toilet was flushed, sink or shower used there was a noisy rumbling sound (we presumed a pump of some sort) lasting about 10 seconds after the water stopped. This woke us from rooms either side and Iām sure we also disturbed them! ||The redeeming feature, which lifted my overall review from a 2 to a 3 was the downstairs bar and the breakfast both of which we enjoyed.||This is a basis British pub in a gorgeous setting with decent food p, good wine and beer and lovely views out over the estuary. ||If youāre a heavy sleeper and donāt mind a tiny room with no storage or floor space then Iād say give it a chance, otherwise itās not going...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreCame here for a meal though you can stay here, but I would book in advance. I was not able to do this as I was climbing snowdon and had to wait for better conditions. So the pub is obviously a popular venue, I went in and asked if there was any table free fo the solo traveller. After 5 mins I was offered a table which could seat 6-8, which I declined and waited to see if a smaller table becomes available (didn't wait long). I enjoyed a bottle of beer whilst I waited, watching and listening to the local banter...those who spoke English lol. The place is separated into two sections, the main bar is a small area which has about 4-6 tables with cushioned benches and chairs. A few keen dart players were showing off their collection of darts and their dart throwing skills. The other section is the main dining section and able to accommodate a group of up to 8. After 20 minutes I was seated and was given the menu to peruse. I thought I had already made up my mind what I wanted...mussels and the house curry. But having casted my eyes on the menu they didn't have mussels for starters so ordered a plate of calamari and for mains - Beef Stifado. The Calamari was tasty, not over cooked and was easy to chew, it came with the usual salad and what looks like homemade tartar sauce (very good sauce) and a decent amount of calamari for one person. Never had a Beef Stifado, hence, I veered away from the house curry. Stifado is a Greek beef stew but slowly cooked in a tomato based sauce with other herbs and spices. I have to say the beef was cooked to perfection. The beef just fell apart and melted in my mouth, the sauce was full wonderful as the herbs and spice swirled in my mouth, really yummy. The dish came with steamed mixed vegetables and roasted baby potatoes all cooked perfectly. So any negative comments not really, maybe the dish could had came with a nice thick bit of bread to soak the sauce...that would had been perfect. Oh and if they can serve mussels as a starter too. The staff were all attentive and the total cost of the meal was reasonably priced. if I ever went back I would definitely book a table ahead of my visit and hopefully they will have this in the menu...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI booked this place for one night far in advance online. It is right on the seashore with great views, up against the castle so close to city center as well. The price was only $98/night and included a great breakfast. I doubt one could find a better deal anywhere in the UK. We arrived on Sunday, May 28, 2023 about 5 PM. I did know that parking was very limited (4-5 spaces) but I was ready to deal with that. What we did NOT know is that we were arriving on a weekend where Monday was a major Bank Holiday in UK. When we arrived a huge party was in full swing with a live band on a portable stage in front of the hotel. Absolutely no chance of getting a parking spot, not even a place to park temporarily so we could check in. I parked the car on the street in front with my left wheels up on the curb. We dragged our luggage inside to the bar. There were at least 300 people outside and probably 75 more inside ordering drinks. I left my wife with the luggage while I went to the far side of the bar to get the attention of a staff person. A young girl of about age 18 showed us to our room on the 2nd floor. She also told us where to park for free overnight. That was awesome. It was a parking lot on the other side of the castle 3 blocks away where the boat slip was. The room was quite small, but nice shower and we did have a great view of the sea. We could also hear the band playing outside directly below our room until about midnight. We had dinner in the restaurant bar. Dinner was actually very good. We both had burgers, fries and beers. In the morning, the free breakfast was very good as well... Full English Breakfast. This hotel was formerly built as the Customs House for ships entering the harbor, so it is very old and has a great history. Staff here are very friendly and helpful. This is a great place to stay but don't expect a 5 star rating. We enjoyed...
