Food by Sean: With a "healthy" option this bad, I say bring on the heart attack!

I was doing some maintenance on my nuclear submarine. I have it stationed in the lake at Swansea Enterprise Park. I built my ship in the 1860s off the coast of France. Captain Nemo LeCox was my name at the time, and it was around this period that I bumped into Jules Verne, the thieving swine! Taking my life story and turning it into cheap entertainment! Ooooh angry grumbling noise.

Once I read the first edition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, I ran away and hid in Swansea Enterprise Park. The French government sent out search party after search party; they never found me. It was called Operation "Finding Nemo." Blub blub blub.

I had arrived earlier in the day, and I realised by about 11 a.m. that I was famished. Nuclear engineering is extremely difficult. It does make my moustache glow a funny colour… not a bad thing… does make sleep tricky.

I digress… I was famished and looked at my phone to find a local eatery when I happened upon Food by Sean. The pictures looked amazing, and I’m always excited to try new restaurants. I hopped out of my submarine using my backpack and flew across the road to the restaurant.

I landed and saw a good omen; their logo. A man with a big moustache and a top hat. I am such a man, I thought. This will be good. Words I would later come to regret.

I sat down in the restaurant and was handed a menu by a lovely young waitress. I read through it; it looked like a concise and compact menu. I noticed they had a healthy breakfast and thought I’d mix it up a little and try it out. It cost £10.95, with a few quid extra for coffee.

This was where I had the first issue. My food took nearly 40 minutes to arrive. I don’t mind waiting, but what I was served wasn’t very good.

The presentation was fantastic; I will say that. The coffee was freshly ground and tasty. But the portion size of the food was shocking.

One slice of turkey bacon that was overcooked and rock hard.

The chicken sausages were skinnier than an anorexic on a hunger strike.

Frozen spinach, not freshly blanched.

The large portobello mushroom was a little tough.

Vine tomatoes were very tender.

Avocado was lovely but lacked any seasoning.

The sourdough was crunchy and delicious.

However, the ranchero beans were DISGUSTING.

This was the healthy option, so I understand the lack of salt (and trust me, it was lacking any form of seasoning across the whole dish). But why, why, WHY would you cut out the salt and then dump a whole load of sugar in the form of BBQ sauce into the beans? They were sickly and sweet. So salt is a no-no (my arteries thank you) but sugar-filled beans are fine? Diabetes, yes. Heart disease, no.

I made a point of mentioning the horrible beans to the server but didn’t get a response. I paid my bill and left. I ordered a McDonald's for lunch. You know it’s bad when McDonald's has better seasoning than a restaurant.

Food by Sean: 2/5 (If you used this as bait to find Nemo, he’d...

Hidden in an Enterprise Park… Serving Up Brunch Goals 🍳☕

ad | invite @food.by.sean.catering

✨ We were kindly invited down to Food by Sean, Llansamlet, by the lovely and ever so lush Ellie to try their most recent menu - and as always, it did not disappoint. We’ve been FBS fans for a while (those interiors, those bakes, those portions 👏), and this visit only reminded us why.

🍳 Regular Breakfast - butchers’ pork sausage, thick cut unsmoked bacon, flat mushroom, vine-on cherry tomatoes, hash brown, egg your way, a pot of Heinz beans & a slab of toast with Welsh butter. A proper hearty plate – the definition of comfort food.

🥚 Four Egg Omelette - filled with cheddar, mushrooms & bacon, served with fresh salad and slaw. Fluffy, packed with flavour, and a portion size that’ll definitely keep you going.

👶 Child’s Breakfast – scrambled egg, beans & bloomer toast. Perfectly simple, and very well received by my little one!

🇫🇷 Pistachio & Raspberry French Toast - with a gorgeous creamy pistachio creme, the punchy raspberries, it’s a good blend of flavours!

💛 Everything was spot on: generous, hearty and exactly what you want from a breakfast out.

🍫 And of course, I couldn’t leave without raiding that sweet counter (it was looking too good 👀). The chocolate & caramel sponge came home with me and WOW – rich, gooey, and absolutely stunning.

🌟 Food by Sean never misses – whether it’s breakfast, lunch or a cheeky cake stop, they’ve nailed the comforting, homely vibe with a polished finish. Already looking forward to...

I’ve held off leaving a negative review the last 2 occasions but I thought I’d give it a 3rd and final chance…. How wrong was I 🤦🏻‍♂️ Been going here a few years now from when it was quite new and the only “Food by Sean” in the area, not weekly but every few months with family, friends or clients. Mainly order the breakfast bagel which WAS amazing (quality & portion size) but it seems the food quality, attention to detail and portion size has diminished….. possibly coinciding with other branches opening. The first time I had a bad experience with the food (bagel) I put it down to a one off, last occasion my breakfast bagel was once again terrible - half the plate was lettuce & coleslaw, the bagel had no butter in it, hard fried egg thrown in the bagel and the bacon was awful. Tried again today for the third time, Jesus once again a mound of coleslaw & lettuce, no butter (had to ask for some), asked for poached this time due to the previous terrible fried egg but the poached were rock solid like boiled eggs. Sausage patty & bacon was fine but had to add ketchup and butter as the bagel was dry as a bone which would have been negated had the eggs at least been soft! As I say the food used to be great and I’m happy to pay a premium as let’s face it the food isn’t cheap but that me done after giving it a few chances….. maybe Sean doesn’t cook in the Llansamlet...

Popped in today while out and about. The venue was well presented and decorated, and the staff were lovely, and it felt welcoming. I sat down and ordered the breakfast for £9.95 and a pot of tea. The tea arrived quickly and was good. I waited a further 40 minutes for my food to arrive, and I wasn't the most impressed. The toast was as expected and decent, but 1 slice wasn't what I expected. The bacon was standard as you'd expect in any cafe. Same as the sausage, although it did lack a little flavour. The egg was poached perfectly but again lacked seasoning. Hash brown was standard and fine. The one thing that did knock my rating down were the beans. They were good as beans go, but it felt like the pot they were served in had been microwaved for far too long. One spoonful onto my toast, and I bit into it and burned my mouth. A microwave is not appropriate in my view. Overall, my experience is that of wetherspoons. We shall see if the standard menu is any different from the breakfast menu. See you next time
