I have complicated dietary restrictions which I emailed them in advance, and the restaurant bent over backwards to accommodate me! I was so impressed at how helpful they were, they were also very honest about the limitations of what they could do (e.g. the fact that obviously other ingredients are prepared in the kitchen and no matter how hard they try they can't guarantee no contamination, but they do use separate utensils & preparation surfaces etc). I wasn't made to feel like an inconvenience at all.
The food was tasty & well cooked; don't come expecting fancy gourmet food, it's reliable Chinese restaurant favourites, well prepared. There seemed to be a couple of dishes on the menu I haven't seen before, although I couldn't try them due to my restrictions. The food was relatively lightly seasoned, so some may find it under seasoned but there was salt, pepper & soy sauce on every table so anyone who prefers heavily seasoned food could easily adjust to taste. Portion sizes were good, with slightly more rice provided than we could realistically eat (with hindsight we probably could have ordered one portion between 2, since we also had starters and prawn crackers!). My daughter ordered duck in plum sauce as her main, which was very nice (we asked them to prepare it in a way that meant I could try it too, which they were happy to do), although if I was ordering it as my main I'd probably want to get a vegetable side dish to accompany it. Mine was king prawns with mushrooms in garlic sauce, which was very satisfying, with succulent prawns. For starters I had honey chicken wings, which were delicious, nicely seasoned and just the right amount of honey. My daughter had duck spring rolls, which she enjoyed.
Food is served "English style" (i.e. knife, fork & plate) by default but if you ask for chopsticks they will give you a bowl & chopsticks if you prefer to eat the Chinese way.
The drinks selection seemed good, with things like local beers & cider, a reasonable selection of wines, and Chinese liqueurs, as well as all the usual beers & spirits, plus gluten free Peroni. And a nice range of non alcoholic drinks too, with lots of Fentiman's drinks in addition to the usual suspects, plus locally sourced spring water & a selection of teas & coffees.
There seemed to be a good selection for vegetarians & vegans, although we didn't try these dishes personally. And the dessert menu looked nice too, although again we didn't have any. I suspect my dietary needs might have been difficult to cater to with the desserts, however there were some gluten free & vegan options so there should be something for most people.
The staff were friendly, polite & accommodating, without being intrusive, and the ambience of the restaurant was "classic Chinese restaurant", with a rather impressive dragon/lion head to greet you!
Overall, an extremely pleasant experience, thank you to the Garden Hotel for enabling me to eat in a Chinese...
Read moreThe first evening of our holiday we decided to go for a meal at The Garden Hotel and Restaurant. From the moment we entered we were treated with kindness and nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant has a friendly atmosphere and the young waiter exceedingly pleasant and helpful about the dishes being served, also very efficient but not intrusive. The food was gorgeous, with a very varied menu with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dishes, something for everyone. The chef should be congratulated on producing fresh, tasty dishes served to an exceedingly high standard. An added bonus, the plates when brought to our table were hot which doesn’t happen very often. Sandra who runs the restaurant is a lovely lady who is cheerful, attentive to all her customers who will take the time to make sure everything is perfect for your meal. It was lovely chatting to her. Since we enjoyed the experience the first time round we decided to go back on our last evening before heading home. We were not disappointed, the high standard of food was just as good the second time round as the first, also the exceptional service. |If you are looking for good food, which is very reasonably priced, with great customer service, then we highly recommend going to The Garden Hotel & Restaurant in Bangor. |You won’t be disappointed. |Thank you for two very...
Read moreThis is a lovely little hotel, conveniently located a few minutes' walk away from the train station, supermarkets, and restaurants, as well as being close to the university. The owner Sandra was the friendliest and most accommodating host I've had the pleasure to meet. Although the restaurant was closed at the time of my stay, she recommended many great places to eat in the local area. The room was comfortable and clean with all the necessary conveniences. I chose a separate private bathroom - which was a bit unusual having the toilet and sink in two separate rooms - but the (actually hot) temperature-controlled shower and complimentary toiletries were much appreciated. Would...
