The pub was busy and that’s fine but the food took a while, when the starter came (nacho’s) it looked like a kids portion. The waiter that brought it over saw the look on my face and asked if it was ok, I politely asked where’s the rest of it? Not long after a female bar staff came over and said us everything ok and I said the same thing again, she said bare with my I’ll ask the manager if we can add more. She came back and explained the manager refused and said we’ll refund. I found this odd, what’s better for the business a few extra nachos n cheese or refund the cost of the starter? Strange decision, anyway I thanked her for the refund.
I was dreading the main at this point to be honest.
The kids chicken nuggets came out, god knows what chicken nuggets were used but they looked like a very very cheap quality. The beans looked white and my 8 yr old didn’t looo impressed, she eat the food though as she was so hungry.
Now my main, I did want half and half but was told it was £2.00 extra, strange to charge extra for the same amount of food but split it between chips and rice? Ok, they don’t do this at most curry houses but ok. I declined.
So my curry, I initially thought there was a lot of curry to discover it was rice all underneath so wasn’t as much as it looked, ok not the end of the world but I’m starving at this point.
The curry, well it was tasteless, didn’t seem like there was any kind of seasoning it even a grain garam/ masala/spices any kind of Indian seasoning it was bland besides the taste of tomato.
A manager (I think) came over and asked me how it was, I explained it was pretty tasteless and rather underwhelming. She was apooogetic in all fairness and offered to get me an alternative.
I declined as it was nearing 5pm and I have to get my daughter back to my ex partner at 6, so wouldn’t have the time to wait again. Quite disappointing and ruined our little dinner date, my daughter who’s only 8 was seemingly sad that dad didn’t have food with her.
Anyhow, I just said I just wanna send the food back to be honest the manager said that’s ok and took it. 10 minutes went by, nobody came back about a refund etc, now it’s edging towards 5.20 and I’ve gotta get my daughter home by 6pm.
The manager finally came over with a refund receipt and 2 wafer biscuits, a nice little touch.
But overall, the food was awful and the service was as slow, staff were polite enough but overall for my first eating experience there it was pretty poor and obviously my daughter being a little upset and disappointed just amplified the situation.
I very much doubt I’d ever return for food ever again, I’d be inclined to warn family and friends about it but wouldn’t particularly want to go out of my...
Read moreIn the interest of honesty I will say that I have previously left a negative review for The Halfway after a bad meal and bad experience. After several correspondence emails between myself and the manager I was invited back to give the food and experience another chance. And it was definitely worth going back!
The staff were brilliant and the food was awesome. We had the lamb shank roast, beef roast and gammon and all meals were perfect. The deserts were to die for, absolutely lovely and they serve a great pint of Guinness 😀.
Dogs being welcome make this the perfect pub for my family so we will definitely be going back and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good pub...
Read moreThe Halfway has been my regular for decades and should be one of the best 'real' pubs in Cardiff. Unfortunately over the last few years it has gone downhill. Since it was refurbished years ago, it has been badly managed and maintained. Much of the fixed furniture is falling apart and the gents toilets are shockingly dirty and desperately need sorting out including new hand dryers, regular refilling the soap dispensers and loo rolls. I haven't eaten here for a while because they always used to run out of many items on the menu. Also, a hygiene rating of 1 doesn't inspire confidence! Come on Brains, get your...
