Lantern — Restaurant in Wales

I read the reviews before I choose to pop in here on my travels and thought I'll try it myself. Outside looks so run down but thought don't judge, went in got seated ordered a coffee. The table was grimy the napkins had oil spots, the seat cushions were stained the table salt and soy sauce jugs were disgusting. Then my coffee turned up, the walls and skirting boards were covered in food (no cleaning or deep cleaning in a long time). So guy comes for my order I said sorry but I'm not eating here. On the plus side the coffee was lovely. Wise trying to drink fast to leave asap the staff are then slagging you off for not eating. (Well clean up and people would eat). Sorry but never again...

As a long time lover of Chinese/ Asian food and having travelled to many asiatic countries I’m constantly amazed at how many restaurants cannot live up to the simple, fresh tastes. Finding only 1 Chinese restaurant in Newtown I was prepared to be disappointed again. To my surprise, The Lantern delivered with outstanding excellence. Fresh, tasty and authentic. A described meal not on the menu was far better than expected. I once heard a good Chinese restaurant does not care about decor because they concentrate on the food. True! Definitely deserves a visit. And staff very friendly too....

1st time we have managed to get through on the phone since it opened! Absolutely vile, chow mein tasted of dishwater, curry was bland, Salt and pepper wings looked raw and were tasteless, The peking sauce on the ribs just tasted of ketchup, can't even be bothered to describe the rest. Worst £40 Ive spent. Wanted delivery as our car Is off road. Will defo just walk to town in future and deal with cold food from the long walk home from our usual Chinese least it will be tasty.
