This place has recently been taken over by a new management team and being local to us, we wanted to try and give our support.
We rung around 12pm on a Sunday to book a table for 3.30pm the same day. It was for a group of 6 (4 adults and 2 young children in highchairs) so wanted to make sure that we were secured a spot.
We arrived and wasn't initially sure what type of arrangement the establishment had in regards to seating so went to the bar to advise we had a table booked. It felt like no one knew about the booking so a table was quickly arranged and someone had set upon finding some highchairs.
The pub is a chain, but the food isn't with that chain so is seperate. So you could order drinks on the app, but food was ordered separately. We were advised on the phone at 12pm that Sunday Dinners were first come first served so couldn't guarantee they'd still be available at 3.30 which was fine and managed our expectations perfectly. They mentioned that the full daily menu is available regardless.
The daily menus were at the table for us to view and we were told that dinner was still available, too.
When we went to order, sadly we were then told that all burgers were off the menu due to having no burger buns. A shame this wasn't told prior to us as we were first sat down as after reading the menu, 2 of the orders were going to be for what sounded to be like a great burger meal!
After going back and working our what we were having, we managed to place our orders.
Food was served quickly and drink orders on the app were quick coming, too.
The food potions were huge! The Dinners were very much home made and 'just like your grandmother made it' type vibes which was cool to see. The comments from our party that they were very good!
Fish and chips were great and the comment was that it was probably one of the best from a pub-style restaurant.
The Cajun Chicken was huge, also and very well seasoned. The chips were cooked very well and lovely & crispy.
One child had fish fingers (but more like bites) and chips and the other had a turkey dinner. Both potions were huge and could have easily been a great lunch potion for an adult.
Overall it was a lovely spot which great, hearty meals which is exactly what you are looking for when you go to a pub style restaurant.
If we were told on the phone that it's just arrive and sit anywhere and they don't pre-book, it would have made more sence from a customers perspective - but when you pre-book for a time and then turn up and have no real front of house, it just makes it a little more 'awkward' for the customer. We would have also been told sooner about having no burger buns etc which would have saved being told they aren't available when ordering.
We would certainly go again and I really do want to try their burgers one day. Being local, it's a perfect spot for us and does have great parking etc, too (remember to put numberplate in though as its a third party owned car park with private parking).
We will be back...
Read moreI visited the Plough and Harrow for lunch on monday 8th April 2019.I ordered chicken, leek and cider pie ,mash and peas. When my meal arrived there was a small hard pie approximately 3 inches in diameter mainly pastry with about 4 small cubes of chicken and few strands of leek,no trace of cider ,dried up tinned peas and a pile of dried up over cooked fries and no mash. When I questioned this the barmaid/waitress (same person) said to keep my meal and she would get a portion of mash. She approached the "dumb waiter" to ask for mash. After approx 15 minutes of her talking to 2 customers she clearly knew, and using her mobile phone behind the bar ,she caught my eye and came over. When I asked where my mash was as my food was going cold and my husband had almost finished his meal (tastless dry overcooked chicken/chorizo burger and pile of dried up over cooked chips ) she said there was no mash and the chef said it came with chips.I pointed out that the menu clearly indicated the pie came with mash and she smirked offering no apology and just walked back to the bar glued to her phone .I was unable to eat much of my meal it was disgusting and didn't taste right so I approached her asking to speak to the manager as I did not think my meal was worth the £8.25 already paid (no receipt). She said the manager was in Cardiff all day so she couldn't do anything.I asked for his name and the pub phone number. She had to google it !!!I left my details for Tom the manager to phone me which he didnt. I phoned back on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings after 7pm as I had been advised and surprise surprise no manager was on the premises both nights again even though I was told he lived downstairs !!.On Wednesday the barmaid said "are you calling me a liar ? "when I asked if my details had even be passed to the manager (she wouldn't last 5 minutes in my job with that attitude). The staff should all be ashamed of their conduct. The barmaid was uninterested and dismissive, the chef clearly didnt know his menu and appeared to merely reheat overcooked food and the manager isnt fit for purpose not one of them collectively offered an apology for serving the wrong meal. What a shambles ....if you want a nice pub meal with half decent staff avoid going to this awful place ,I will be telling everybody I know about my appauling experience to save them making the...
Read moreBooked a table for 12.30 got there just before to be told the chef was out shopping. We laughed it off and ordered food. Starters were served at 1.30 and mains just after 2.30 after we asked where our food was. The waitress apologised and explained the kitchen was backed up??? There were 5 tables with people ordering food which we counted 6 meals in total? Backed up i said?? The food was absolutely disgusting. So salty and the steak we ordered was definately not sirloin. We gave it to the dog. The cajun chicken was cold and again so salty I couldn't eat it.my friend had the same but hers was warm. And a real 80's theme going on there with watered down vinegar??? Really? What a letdown. After reading the reviews I am baffled what happened today? There was a lovely guy who we saw when we got there but he disappeared upstairs. Very odd. Absolutely baffling. My friend had a curry and said was OK, but being the polite chap he is said he was happy but the girl serving heard us all complain and did nothing. What a shame. What chef goes shopping when it opens at 12 and doesn't return until after 12.30? You cant make it up. I felt sorry for the guy, he was absolutely lovely. Would we give it another go? I...
