I went to Elma on Friday 22nd October and it was the third time that I dined here. I left shocked on this occasion at the unacceptable behaviour displayed by the waiting staff. I was on a date with my Girlfriend before she went home, and it was the last time I was going to see her for the next couple of months. It was thus an occasion which should have been enjoyable. Instead, the way the staff behaved towards me was nothing short of disgraceful and extremely belittling. The male waiter repeatedly looked at my girlfriend throughout our time in the restaurant, and when serving us always addressed her and turned away from me; which in itself is unprofessional for a restaurant charging the prices that Elma do. My girlfriend had noticed this throughout the meal, which left her feeling very uncomfortable. Upon leaving the restaurant, we were then chased up the road by a different member of staff asking for my girlfriend’s number. Given we were paying customers, this was outright outrageous. I then went back into the restaurant this week (26th October), where I spoke to the waiter in question. He refused to apologise and said that he wanted to make a move for my girlfriend- and at no point saw this as being unprofessional. I will not be giving Elma any further custom and would urge people to go to one of the many other good restaurants...
Read moreAfter reading great reviews we decided to eat here on our last night visiting this lovely town.
This was possibly one of the worse experiences I've ever had in a restaurant, and I don't complain very often.
We had the set menu one, I had a mixed grill - I ate two chips and some chicken and left the rest.
A virtually untouched plate of food being cleared from the table didn't seem to concern the staff at all.
We asked for a smaller portion of the set desert to be brought out as we had already decided the food wasn't great and we're concerned we would only leave it.
We did. I was handed a bill by a different server who was very polite, and another server came to take payment. I have never not tipped in a restaurant until today, I was expecting a bill of £91 and was a bit confused when my card had to be put in the machine, a near £10 service charge had been added on which I asked to be removed.
I was disappointed that, unlike in most restaurants that take tip via card machine I wasn't even informed this was being added, as it was not on the receipt.
Hugely disappointing but having read some of the other reviews it seems even complaining may not have made any difference. Avoid...
Read moreTwo of us arrived around 13:30. Waitress was friendly to start with. She sat us down and placed our food and drink very promptly.
Drinks took a little while but the lemonade and coffee was lovely, we asked for a bottle of tap water but she didn't bring one. We assumed she'd bring it out later as her tray was full.
Food arrived, my partner was missing a portion of chips and again no water, we kindly reminded her. She said she'll bring it out That was the last time we saw her throughout or meal.
My food was fine, but my partner's prawns were quite overcooked. The table behind us were complaining about their prawns too, maybe the chef was new? We wanted to send them back but as she didn't return we couldn't really do so without carrying the plate into the bar.
After waiting we got fed up and decided to head to the bar to pay. She noticed us getting up tried to offer us some dessert but we made it clear we just wanted to pay and leave.
We paid for what we ate and she did take the prawns off the bill but this was a real let down. We came here a few years ago I remember the food and service being...
