Been coming here for years out of convenience, but just recently started exploring the menu beyond burritos. The taquitos are amazing and not what you'd expect. These suckers are more like flautas in that they are much larger than any taquito I've seen. I order the chicken taquitos and they are huge, stuffed full of extremely juicy and flavorful shredded chicken, then deep fried and smothered in a shredded cheese blend, smashed avocado, and sour cream. It's a glorious guilty pleasure. I also tried for the first time a crispy chicken taco, where I'd normally order traditional street tacos. This taco had a lovely, very crispy shell with that tender, juicy shredded chicken filling with choice of pico on the inside. Then, the taco is drowned in a salsa roja that has a strong buffalo wing sauce influence. What I DO NOT recommend is their tamales, which breaks my heart because I am a tamale fiend and their tamales are just... Not good. The masa has an almost gelatinous texture and there is way too much of it in comparison to filling. Disappointing to...
Read moreI came here and got a combo plate with ground beef enchilada and ground beef taco with refried beans and rice. The beans and rice was very flavorful but the enchilada and taco wasn’t good. The ground beef wasn’t seasoned and it seemed like it was twice cooked which dried it out and made not good. The enchilada red sauce wasn’t a good flavor either and the taco had the same quality of meat. Pittsburg ca had a location with the same name as this place and their food was absolutely AWESOME but this place in Alameda is not even close. I’m giving it two stars because the lady working the cash register was really friendly and nice. When you get Mexican food the sauce and the meat has to be seasoned, fresh cooked and flavorful to win the taste war. I might try something else here to see if it’s better but hopefully they see this review and step their game up. I wasn’t happy overall with the taste of my...
Read moreI have been a patron of Taqueria Viva Mexico for about 10 years now.
I tend to keep it simple and order some sort of burrito: bean & cheese, chicken chimichanga, or Viva Mexico Burrito - chicken.
The items mentioned above are decent and they hit the spot but I always get a terrible headache afterwards.
It is a great place to eat if you are hungry and don’t have a lot of money. Example: #13 Bean & cheese burrito, chips and small drink is $4 and some change. #15 chimichanga, chips, and small drink is $5 and some change.
It’s not the best Mexican food I’ve ever had but it will do.
It is my belief that the best Mexican food is found in contra costa county. Side note: Mexicali Rose (RIP) did have the absolute BEST chicken...
