The customer that takes their time to come into this establishment are treated as a secondary priority to DoorDash/UberEats/Grubhub online customers comfortably sitting on their couch. We waited (in the rain) about 15 minutes before getting a table. Once inside, there were no menus on our table. The hostess did, in fact, apologize for the delay due to an influx of orders, so we expected to wait a bit. Our arrival time was 10:30am. Seated at 10:50am. Menus were not on the table until 11:10am. A group that entered 15 minutes after us got their order taken first at 11:50pm. Order taken at 11:55pm---FOR BREAKFAST. In the meantime, as we sat for 1 hour sipping coffee awaiting this waitress, we watched as over 20 dashers (NOT AN EXAGGERATION) left with bags (and sometimes boxes) of prepared food. For the wait, they offered donuts since that was ready to go. We figured it was a situation like "oh, we're so sorry it's taking so long, here's some donuts on the house..." but it was not. When the waitress came to take our order just before noon, she asked what donuts were on the empty plate on the table so she could tally that onto our bill. We were tired, hungry, and appalled that the online orders clearly take precedence here, and people who came down, found parking, braved the weather, and waited outside AND inside were the least of their concern. We had asked if we could speak to the manager, to which she replied: "no one is a manager here." We asked if we could speak to an owner, to which she replied "I don't even speak to them, they are somewhere in San Mateo." OMG. At around 12:30 or so food showed up. Well, a plate of pancakes showed up. My son and I came back inside from stretching our legs out in the fresh air as we have been there nearly 2 hours now with horrible service, lots of coffee, and some donuts. We all took a dive into the pancakes...warm--not hot--and cakey and dry. My son's food showed up next, and he began to dig in. My food (along with my wife's food) showed up when my son was already half done. At that time, we requested to return the pancakes due to their temperature and dryness. She asked if we wanted something else, and my wife stated: "No, we just want to go home at this point." to which the waitress gave a nasty look to her. Overall, the food was OK, maybe a 5/10 for the Benedict, a 6/10 for the Bird's Nest, and 2/10 for the Hippie Hash. My son made his hash browns flavorful by adding syrup. My wife and I are breakfast place junkies. The best breakfast place we have ever eaten in is only 1 1/2 blocks away; we wanted to give a chance to other local businesses, but this is what you get when you try and copy what the best (Ole's) has done for decades: balance great customer service, great food quality, and find a way to manage online deliveries while prioritizing in-person dining in a post-COVID world. Home Skillet cannot currently do this. They need better staffing, and a "customer in hand is worth two online" approach...immediately. SIDE NOTE: This is the first time I've ever chosen to NOT leave a...
Read moreWe visited the Alameda location on a Saturday. We waited 20 minutes for a table. The staff was nice, very attentive and good customer service. Sadly the food did not meet the same standard. The pancakes were sliced up on the bottom side so when we flipped to butter the bottom pancake, the top pancake breaks apart. 😕 The taste and flavor of the pancakes were similarly disappointing; bland, didn’t hold butter well so when I expected buttery hotcakes, I just got hotcakes.
Our strategy was to try two classic items and two of the more fancy items. So in addition to the classic hot cakes we also tried the classic grilled cheese. Sadly it was the worst grilled cheese sandwich I ever had. The toast was dry, not buttery at all, and by the time we got it, the cheese had already begun to resolidify onto the toast. The same was true for the fancy grilled cheese, we were excited to try this one given it included pepper jack and harvarti cheese which are just delicious. But the fancy grilled cheese sadly did not do these two amazing cheeses any justice. Again the toast was dry, and so was the cheese.
The final thing was the hipster hash. The sunny side up egg was broken, which just made the plate look very sad. 😞 Then the hashbrowns just didn’t taste right. Perhaps not cooked at the right temperature or not enough seasoning or oil? I was glad to see they used real potatoes, but they weren’t prepared with enough flavor.
We had some donut holes and those were tasty. I think some of these reviews are for different locations like perhaps the one in Redwood City? We were very excited to try this new restaurant but we won’t be trying it again. Perhaps if even just one of our dishes was worthwhile then we would return to give it a second chance. But everyone was too disappointed for us to ever return.
We gave two stars, one for service and one...
Read moreI was visiting the Oakland area and wanted some good breakfast, I saw the reviews on Homeskillet and decided I would give it a try. Homeskillet is on DoorDash for delivery and pick-up and due to Covid there is currently no dine in so I place my order on DoorDash which was very easy and convenient with a 18-20 min wait. Upon arrival I was asked if I had a pick up order and I let them know I did and the name it was under; as the lady begin to help someone else I decided to check in on Yelp and with checking in your suppose to get a free donut Mon-Thru, since today is Friday and Im only in the area for a couple of days I asked if I could get the free donut for checking in and the lady said she actually is not doing the free check in at the moment, she was very nice about it but there were lots of donuts right there that was an easy good customer service deed that could’ve happened right there but it didn’t (note). Me and my family order food; I order the classic breakfast we were all happy with our food it taste good, my sausage was a little over cooked but it was better than being under cooked. Would we eat there again? Yes everyone agreed it...
