Would give 5 stars but just a few different things that hindered perfect score but this place will be on my go to list everytime I come through. I am a chef by trade that changed careers and I'm a truck driver that lives in iowa but my significant other lives in Arizona. Tay was my server she was a doll and a sweetheart and made sure I had everything I needed. Was accommodating for me having had gastric bypass surgery! Now to the atmosphere it's like a great mom and pop small down home spot. Koolaid makes you remember you childhood when you would just say the color of which one you wanted! Now the food!! This is where the excitement and disappointment hits. So I'm originally from springfield Illinois back in the 90s we had a restaurant called that catfish shack where you could get either fried catfish or fried chicken with greens and spaghetti that restauranthas been closed for nearly 2 decades. When I saw the episode triple d and saw how the chicken and waffles was made I knew I had to try it!! The greens were disappointing I was surprised on how low the flavoring was but I could of just been there on an off day or maybe got some from the end of the batch. There was a lot of turkey skin which doesn't bother me but I was saddened by the lack of acidity and salt/seasoning that I have grown to love of greens though by adding hot sauce it made them better. The mac and cheese I'm not sure if maybe it was the last of the pan but it was dry compared to what I saw on the episode but I did reconstitute when I got home to Arizona and it got better!. Now the waffle this thing the aromatics coming off the thing when it was placed in front of me instantly made my mouth water! And the chicken. I tried a bite with all ingredients with hot sauce and it was awesome! But the chicken this is where the amazing and happiness comes in!!! I doused my tenders in Louisiana hot sauce took a bite and was taken back to the catfish shack in the 90s I'm not sure if frank has family from Illinois but my man you made this woman about cry from the memory!! You should add fried catfish and spaghetti to the menu!!! Overall happy to report I will be stopping everytime I come home to Arizona from iowa and when I go from Arizona back to my dad's in iowa to get...
Read moreMarch 2021: During Coronavirus times, they're open for pickup and patio dining; no inside dining, nor beer, temporarily.
Located on a rather quiet street, restaurant has 2 VERY pretty patios under large shade trees: the wooden patio has 5 tables, the brick patio has 2 tables, some with umbrellas.
The $13 Shrimp and Grits is SO flavorful, with sautéed mushrooms, onions, bacon, and 6 large shrimp in a little spicy sauce, topped with fresh green onion. The grits are creamy, with cheese on top. If that's the only thing you order, you'll be satisfied, not stuffed. The Chicken and Waffles is another must-try. The fried chicken wings are moist inside with a crisp, thin, highly-seasoned batter - SO delicious. You can get 12 wings-only for $12 {sauced or not}, or their famous Chicken AND Waffles accompanied by syrup, cinnamon-butter, hot sauce : 3 Wings/2 Tenders + 1 Waffle - $5.75; 6 Wings/4 Tenders + 2 Waffles - $11; 12 Wings/8 Tenders +2 Waffles- $16. If you get waffles, suggest you eat immediately or they'll steam-soften in the to-go container. {Or reheat in pan at home to crispen.} The Pecan Bacon Waffle is decadently delicious. Menu has so much more, like a fried fish and shrimp meal with fries and slaw for $16, Po'Boy and Chicky Dee sandwiches for $9 each, a slew of very Southern sides like smoked meat Greens, Red Beans and Rice, Candied Yams, etc. And Pecan Pie...
Service is casual and takes time as they freshly make much to order... So go knowing could take 20+ minutes for an order like Chicken and Waffles + Shrimp and Grits. Or order in advance.
Fyi, have to ask if want {styrofoam*} cup of ice - comes with environmentally-friendly paper straw {lasts 12+ hours}. MAYBE can ask for an eco-friendlier Mason Jar cup for your...
Read moreThis place is going downhill fast 🏃♀️. I was in this past weekend. My family walks in they ask how many in my party I tell them I was told a table is being cleaned up as we speak, 30 min later we finally get called back to sit down Tony, our server comes to get our drinks. We tell her 3 sweet teas and one coke she brings 2 unsweetened teas that taste like mop water, and one sweet. She Forgets the coke completely 15 minutes pass before I flag her down again to let her know she missed the coke she brings a hot bottled coke after another 10 min i ask her for a cup with ice she tells us she would be right back with it sorry about forgetting it. As she walks away she gets into a feud with another coworker. 10 min later she comes to take our order. I once again ask for the ice in a cup, and we place out order 45 more minutes pass she brings out the food, slams it on the table, and walks off spilling the syrup all over the table. She comes back after 10 min I ask for the cup with ice again and this time she finally brings it. The food was not good like it was in the past everything was cold and the chicken was naked no breading on it she never came to check on us again until she brought the bill. I was in this place for 2 hours. I know everyone has bad days but the last 3 times I've been in this place I've not been satisfied, like I once was with this place, and I go about once a month. I'm writing this review to hopefully get to the owner so he can get ahold of the situation before this place really plummets. Yes, I know this is a popular place to go, and it gets busy but a customer doesn't deserve to be treated...
