I have got to stop coming here. I'll gain tons of weight!
I discovered this place last Sunday while looking for Grumpy's guitar in the same strip mall. One of my kids was with me. We had red borscht, Russian roulette pierogis, and gyro. I fell in love with the place. We both wanted to come back again. We bought some baked goods and Halva to take home.
Then, I took a friend from Poland when he was visiting on business (He loved the place - we had pierogi again, red borscht, and Polish and German sausage, three types of sauerkraut, potato salad ... waaaayyy too much food). Personally, I think the red borscht is the best. I never had in my life until now. It's the perfect meal. And, the Polish sausage crushes it ... I will be eating much more of that.
Next, I took my wife. She had the gyro, I had the white borscht. My wife is Turkish. She knows her gyros. She was exceptionally pleased with the gyro at Red Rock Deli. My wife tried the white borscht, liked that better than the red borscht. So far, the red is my favorite. She loves places like Red Rock Deli ... she recognizes much of the food because she's from Europe. I'd only had Polish / Ukrainian food one other time in my life, when I lived in NYC. so, most of the items in the store I am not familiar with and someone has to explain it to me. We left with an assortment of groceries - mustards, teas, cookies, crackers, etc.
Today for an early dinner I had the Art Wiener Schnitzel (breaded pork cutlet), my kid the Gyro, my wife the Ukrainian Borscht, and we all shared mushroom and kraut pierogi. For dessert they had a poached peach something Helene, and we got the sweet pierogi. The sweet berry pierogi was awesome ... the peach dish could easily qualify for an exceptionally high end, fine dining type dessert ... it looked high end, and was exceptional with numerous tastes all working together ... but still separate and unique. Hard to describe, but over the top good. My daughter loved the sweet cheese pierogi.
That's 4 times in a week!!! I never get psyched about a place like this. A bunch of tastes I'v either rarely had or never had. And, they've got jams, and honeys, and baked goods, and take home pierogis, custards,...
Read moreThis place is a nice, small, family-owned restaurant and grocery store specializing in Eastern European (Polish/Ukrainian/Russian) food. The Eastern European dishes on the menu are authentic, homemade, and delicious, making it (to my knowledge) a unique spot for this type of cuisine in Albuquerque. It is a rare culinary gem in the desert of chain restaurants that comprise the vast majority of Albuquerque cuisine, and one that should be supported. Bortsch, pierogi, polska kielbasa, sauerkraut, and potato salad are all homemade and delicious. They also have typical American deli fare. The grocery section is fairly small, but has a solid and growing selection of unique foods and beverages from Eastern Europe. The husband and wife who own the place are very friendly and welcoming. Other family members also seem to work there. My only criticism of the place (and I feel sad to say this) is that the owners' teenage son has terrible manners! Many of the things he says to his parents, and both to and about customers are truly cringeworthy! I love this place, but I dread being in his presence. His parents should either insist that he make a complete and immediate reformation of his behavior or stay completely out of public view for the sake of...
Read moreit has a very plain unassuming exterior, but oh my god, the food is amazing! These are the best pierogies I've ever had. (definitely get them in onions and bacon). I had the Russian Roulette and they were all so delicious. Sauerkraut, potato, potato and ham, spinach, spinach and cheese, mushroom... Just divine. and we tried the borscht. I was wary, cause I'm not a fan of "cold soups", but this wasn't! it was full of veggies, very hot, and utterly delicious. I just wanted to keep eating it. After we were stuffed, we had to shop the little deli part. So much fun! I especially liked the little frozen honey cheesecake bar. And this tea... We had to put the tea in different cabinets when we got home because the smell is wonderfully strong! That whole cabinet now smells like raspberry. I also got some sour cherry jelly, delish. The chocolate cookies are great and I can't wait to use these egg noodles. Next time, I'll buy some of the frozen pierogies and blintzes. And maybe the sodas, and canned meat, and sauerkraut, and pickles..... Definitely worth a...
