So trying to find a nice spot for a friendly brunch and someone tells me about this location. This is my first time here and as I arrive and walk in I Stand at the front where there is a sign but no personnel around to greet or anything just a sign telling you to wait so after a few mins I go to the counter where I see workers but everyone is walking around busy .. the lady in the front passes me a few times without even as much as eye contact or a we will be right with you. And everyone's disposition seems off to the point where I'm already questioning my decision of eating here. But it's full so why not. After no acknowledgement for a few more minutes I initiate by saying good morning to the lady that had ignored me previously and was met with a depressing gaze instead of a good morning back. Filling her in that it's customary to greet customers that walk into your establishment. Her Reply was pulling out her cell phone to show me a picture of an accident last night with no context as if it was her or another employee. I reply as sad as that is, I myself am not a mind reader and she then proceeds to tell me it isn't her job that's what the people up front where I stood initially for five minutes where no one was was supposed to do. She then informs me that she is the Owner and after this being my first time i tell my party I'm with let's go and her reply was Bye. I say all of that to say this If you have a situation that is that traumatic stay home and don't go to a job where you have to provide customer service. I was not aware of what life was throwing at you just like you weren't aware or cared less that it was my first time visiting your establishment. But thank you for letting me know that your business values it's own circumstances rather than those of the people actually coming in to spend their hard earned money. You will never see any business from me and i will ensure that everyone knows how you...
Read moreAn hour wait on a Sunday morning and it was worth every second! The place lives up to all the hype.
We were greeted at the end of the line by a hostess who brought us out a menu and advised us of a little bit of wait and how the ordering system works. Nice, and thoughtful touch which we appreciated.
We hung out in line and enjoyed conversation and laughs and before you know it we were at the counter ready to order! I ordered a carne adovada burrito and the thing was literarily the size of a football! The meat was not in chunks like a lot of places but rather a shredded pork that had been cooked until buttery tender. The monstrosity also contained potatoes which were I believe baked potato chunks, that were also very tender yet had a little grill to them. It was topped off with a sour cream and some pickled onions that I didn't care for on the first bite, but by the time I was done I wish I had more of them! Others with me had chorizo burger which was my favorite out of everything at the table. The buttermilk pancakes! The buttermilk pancakes! The buttermilk pancakes! Not sure how they do it but they are EXCELLENT pancakes! Just try them! The huevos rancheros were excellent and the sausage, green chili burrito was delicious. The sausage was different in that it was sweet instead of your typical salty greasy version. And the chili had a great flavor and spice.
Parking was free in front of the building. Because it was Sunday the street metered spots to the east of the building were free so take advantage of that!
The painted picture on the wall of Anthony Bourdain was all I needed to see to know that this place was going to be worth the wait and it was truly worth every second!
Good job The Shop Breakfast and Lunch! The cooks in the back rockin and rollin you are a true gem to...
Read moreThis was my first time at The Shop. I joined a friend for Saturday lunch at 12:30pm and sat on the netting-covered patio. There were still tables available inside and out. The venue is located inside the Del Castillo building, which was built in 1948. On the patio are three tables for dining.
Ordering is counter service. I ordered the chorizo mac and cheese. Neither the online or in-person menus had any sides listed. I asked what sides I could order along with the entree, and the cashier/server seemed confused. She asked, “Like what?” And I said “Sides like bread, etc.” She said they had toast and a biscuit, so I got a biscuit, a bowl of chorizo mac and cheese, and a Fanta orange soda for $20.23 including tax (excluding tip). After ordering, you get a number you place at the table and the food is delivered. I was told the wait would be 35-40 minutes, which was exactly accurate. There were extra tables both inside and outside the restaurant, so I’m not sure why the long wait time since they weren’t at capacity. Perhaps that’s usual there?
The chorizo didn’t taste like chorizo to me, and I couldn’t identify any pieces of meat in the mac other than some ground beef. It was chorizo-spiced, which isn’t exactly what was advertised. The dish was exceptionally greasy. I didn’t really mind that, though some diners will. The biscuit was good, though I likely would have ordered a side of vegetables if they have those as sides - the cashier didn’t know.
I don’t get the hype surrounding The Shop. It’s counter-serve Americana and light New Mexican, so if you’re looking for general staples (no sides included or suggested), this might be a good choice, especially if you’re fine with...
