Im confused about this place. I am new to the neighborhood and was excited to try it but the service has turned me off. I walked in a month or so ago and got in line behind a couple that had already paid yet the barista continued chatting with them and no other barista acknowledged me. They seemed to have no urgency to keep taking orders at a very busy time so I walked out. I went back today because they were hosting early check in for the dog walk event. When I walked in I didn’t immediately see the dog walk table so I thought maybe I had to get in the coffee line. Again, all of the baristas ignored me and were talking to someone they went to school with. When I looked around confused, the dog people did flag me over to where I should go. On the way out I did get back in line for coffee and the barista who took my order made an effort to be helpful and friendly. They also asked if I could wait outside at the window and that was fine with me. I was aiming to be friendly, and when the girl who actually made the drink handed it to me through the window I shared that if they did window orders I would love that because I have a dog. But the entire time I was talking she kept shutting the window more and more. It’s clear they’ll be friendly to people they know but that seems to be it. Latte was fine but nothing wowed me about it. Would prefer they used a different kind of ice too.
Also, the setup is strange. The pastries are out of your eyesight when you’re ordering so I didn’t see the options until I was on the way out. Would have liked to try a bear claw but didn’t want to get...

It's been hard to find excellent, house roasted coffee in the D.C area. Even in the district, not a lot of people are roasting their own coffee, brewing their own coffee, and treating their own coffee with the respect it deserves. Too many shops, I have found, don't respect the product they serve, even if it's their own.
This is not the case here.
My espresso was stellar; soft acidity reaching towards banana, chocolate, gentle baking spices. It was so balanced, so thought out it, it hits the nail on the head.
Their website gives easy descriptions and guides on how to brew their coffee. Not only is the place built for the coffee geeks, it's built for those just looking for a good cup. There's an awareness- an eye for details, and an understanding of the big picture.

Read moreI was keen to try this roaster given the high reviews. I was looking for beans to bring home but wanted to try the coffee first. They had 2 beans on offer which is good. I ordered a single origin Guatemala cortado and my wife got an oat latte with the same beans. Updated review: I made it back yesterday and tried their regular espresso cortado. It was a blend of Colombian and Brazilian and quite good. Some interesting fruity and chocolate notes and well balanced. Not as acidic as the single origin and a better choice for an espresso drink.
My cortado was only ok. It was unclear if it was the beans or execution but not something to bring home. My wife didn’t finish her latte as she thought it too bitter and not very good. I was tempted to try their espresso blend next but they were sold out of beans. I will try them again, but not...
