I must be Thai'd up, because I'm turning purple
$4.99 Tuesday pad Thai special 11am - 5pm
Yes, you heard right! Instead of Taco Tuesday, where you can score a few tacos, you can instead nab an order of pad Thai at Thai Purple, dine in or to go.
Having not had pad Thai in an awfully long time, and on my hour and a half lunch break from jury duty, I stopped by Thai Purple not expecting much from their Tuesday pad Thai special. I envisioned noodles with a couple measly shrimp. Boy, were my low expectations happily kiboshed!
Pad Thai- An ample serving of Thailand's most famous dish, the pad Thai came with 2 shrimp, chicken, peanuts, bean sprouts, green onions and the rest of the accoutrements. The tamarind sauce had a nice balance of sweet to sour, more favoring the sweet. The noodles had a welcome consistency and I happily enjoyed my meal, especially when factoring in the cost. Yes!
Besides their Tuesday pad Thai special, Thai Purple has daily bento-style lunch specials. From 11am - 5pm, $8.99 gets you-
Choice of selected entrée Choice of appetizer (fried vegetarian egg roll, fried pork rib, chicken wings, fried tofu, BBQ chicken) Salad Rice Soup (dine-in only) Drink (Thai tea, Thai iced coffee, lemonade, Lipton iced tea or soda)
While the lunch specials offer variety, in my opinion, the portions are rather small and I wouldn't come close to satiating my appetite.
Service was good. While waiting for my pad Thai, I was given iced water to drink. Ample seating, with booths around the perimeter and long tables located in the center of the restaurant. Handsome décor with many Buddha statues spread throughout. Parking is at the rear of Thai Purple in the public parking structure on 1st street. Thai Purple is located across Garfield from the movie theater.
Can't beat $4.99 pad Thai! Thai Purple's Tuesday special hit the spot. Cheap, filling & pretty darn good, too! If I lived in the area, this would be my go to food spot every Tuesday. If I'm ever called to serve at the Alhambra courthouse again, and it's a Tuesday, it's a sure thing you'll find me here with pad Thai on my mind.

Read moreWe have passed by this restaurant in Alhambra many times and never had a chance to try it. Since it’s just a stone’s throw away from the bustling Edwards Cinema, We decided to have lunch here before going to a movie.
Thai Purple offers a culinary escape to the vibrant streets of Thailand. As we stepped in for a quick lunch, the restaurant’s royal purple theme immediately caught our eye, a nod to the regal hues of Thai tradition.
With a lunch menu brimming with Thai favorites, our time constraints led us to select two classic dishes: the Green Papaya Salad and Pad Thai. The salad was a refreshing burst of tangy and spicy flavors, a perfect appetizer to whet our appetites. The Pad Thai, on the other hand, was a delightful journey to the street food stalls of Bangkok, with its authentic taste and perfectly balanced spices.
While the decor may hint at yesteryears, it adds to the charm of Thai Purple, making it feel like a well-loved and established spot for those in the know. The ambiance is cozy, inviting diners to relax and savor their meals in a no-rush environment.
The food, while not groundbreaking, was satisfying and true to its roots. Service was efficient, ensuring we were well taken care of without feeling rushed, despite our time constraints. And for those driving, the convenience of parking in the back is a welcome feature in the often-crowded streets of Alhambra.
In conclusion, Thai Purple stands as a testament to the simple pleasures of Thai cuisine. It may not be extraordinary, but it’s the authenticity and the comforting atmosphere that will beckon you back, time...
Read moreI was in the area and hungry. Thai sounded great. I love Yellow Curry and ran across Thai Purple in Google search.
The name of their Yellow Curry was "Thai Purple Curry." I figured if they named their yellow curry after the restaurant, it was probably going to be good.
Let me first say, I'm a huge Yellow Curry fan. I get it whenever I eat Thai food. I can tell you great yellow curry all over LA. From Pasadena to Santa Monica, I know where to get my fav, Yellow Curry. So, I was hoping to add Thai Purple to my list.
Thai Purple is NOT on the list.
The place itself was nice enough, and the person I dealt with was nice as well. But, on a Friday evening, around 7PM, in a normally fairly busy part of the town, the place was empty.
Ordered Thai Curry and Spring Rolls.
First, the Spring Rolls were very good. They were big and delicious.
Now to the Curry. In and of itself, before tasting it, it was simply ok. Didn't really see much substance. Looked like simply chicken, a few small pieces of potato, and a few slivers of onion. But what really makes a curry is the flavor. And this is where I was truly lost. The flavor was weird at best, and I gave it a chance, continuing to eat, hoping that i would get accustomed to weird and that I'd start liking it. It went from weird to awful. The taste was weird and pungent. I could not continue and had to throw out the dish.
Gave two stars because the Spring Rolls were good, and thankfully, I had some frozen Trader Joe's Vegetable Samosas to heat up and...
