We had a reservation for Valentine’s Day, and chose their highest tier - the diamond menu. Boy! Was it a waste of money and evening! We were seated BY THE DOOR (for the diamond menu nonetheless).. people kept going in and out, it was cold and a few customers complained about the door being constantly opened. I approached the hostess and asked if they could put a sign on the door saying “reservations only” cause they just kept turning people around, they said they would, they never did. They didn’t care. Lack of care was seen throughout the whole experience. Nobody ever came up to us through the entire dinner asking how our food was or whether we needed anything, not even at the end. Many times we were sitting there with empty glasses. The appetizers started arriving 45 mins after we were seated, and that’s for a pre-reserved pre-set $400 diamond tier. We had people hanging over our food waiting for their tables in addition to being cold (which by the way totally killed the temperature on their expensive wagyu steak). At some point the employees had papa John’s pizza delivered, and the delivery guy spread the multiple boxes right under our feet. Here we are, paying top dollar for a supposedly romantic dinner, an intricate dining experience with papa John’s aromas spreading throughout the tiny space. Food was mediocre at best. I mentioned the appetizers did not arrive until 45+ mins after we were seated. The nigiri and sashimi were tiny, and not the best cut. We have dined at Michelin-Star (this one is not, but prices are comparable) sushi restaurants both in this country and in Japan, and never had such mediocre food for the price. I ordered uni in addition to the pre-set menu (that and drinks and the menu brought our check to over $500 for 2), and it was meh. They also skipped one of our courses (the sashimi course) thinking maybe we wouldn’t have noticed. The wagyu steak was…wait for it… chewy!!!! The crème brûlé for the dessert did NOT have the necessary burnt crunchy part on it, they forgot to torch it. We had dined at MF bar prior to this. Food was fine, service was always bad. But this lack of care and a very unpleasant experience sitting right by the door (for what was supposed to be a special night and a fine dining experience considering the prices) was what prompted me to write this review. For decent sushi in the area I would go to sushi Nami right around the corner there. If you want elevated sushi, I would suggest sushi Hayakawa in Midtown (he just got a Michelin star). The prices are only a little bit higher at Hayakawa, but not much, the difference in atmosphere, experience, quality and quantity of food is HUGE. The picture is of how close the people and the door were to me sitting there. I should have snapped a picture of papa John’s being spread right under my feet, but I was sitting there in utter...
Read moreLet me first say I kind of consider myself a of bit sushi snob so I was excited to visit MF Bar.
Also compliments to the service staff, the service was fantastic waiter was great. He really did a good job and was working with what he had. When we walked in noticed the restaurant was a bit empty. Interesting for the Avalon at 8PM on a Friday night.
The prices were comparable to Kinjo Room or Ok-u in town. However when the food arrived it was less than satisfying. The portions were extremely small. I ordered the King Salmon Sashimi with truffles and caviar. And, while it tasted very good. the slices were paper thin, props to the sharp knifes chef, but come on! After that I had the lobster miso soup, which was great, but portioned to about a cup. Again, was expecting a normal sized miso soup bowl...not so much.
After the apps and the soup, I was still very hungry and looking forward to the main course. I ordered a roll, cant remember what it was, not very memorable. And I'll tell you why, I got about 8 pieces all of which barely had any sushi, much less rice. I've see sushi places try and off set the protein with rice and sauces, but not even such an attempt here.
All to say, and I'm not kidding, I had to go down the way to Marlowe's and share a burger with my date we were both so hungry. And before any of you say, this dude must be huge. I'm 5'8 and 155lbs. In summation, the meal was more like an appetizer that cost, $135.00 with tip.
If you want to pay high prices and get an actually good Sushi dinner I suggest Monkey 68 Kitchen And Bar in Roswell, Sushi Nami in off Glennridge (more in town) or Kinjo Room in West Midtown....
Read moreWe were excited to go here with some friends because My Fiancee loves to go to the shops at Avalon but its a 45 min drive to get there. So after the long ride and finally finding parking after about 20 min we were on our war to get sushi, still very excited. So We were seated right away (we had reservations but there was only about 13 people there at 7 on a Saturday night) It took them about 15 min to even ask if we wanted something to drink. Did I mention there were only about 13 customers in this place and they had about 8 people working in there. The prices are higher then most average sushi places so I expected the sushi to meet my expectations. We ordered the avocado ball as an app (2 super small little things about the size of a cherry that didn't have much flavor to speak of. Next we had grilled yuzu octopus salad, over cooked so it was not tender but the dressing was good. when the sushi came out we some order of sake signature nigiri, pretty bland, couldn't even taste the truffle soy. Got an order of Tekkamaki (tuna roll) and it had way more wasabi in it then tuna, it wasn't very pleasing to the pallet. (we did a second order without wasabi. We also got a spicy tuna Osaka box roll. This roll was better but I wouldn't pay $17 to try it again. Over all the place was far to pricy for the hype and quality. I wouldn't recommend this place for dinner if you at the shops at avalon and looking for a place to eat or if you are looking for a good sushi place. Not impressed, I expected much more when your spending over $100 for a meal. The servers was very nice as...
