Was in Alton today and wanted a sandwich. Google listed this place as a result. I was willing to give it a shot because it’s clearly not a corporate/chain place.
I got a Pastrami and an Italian Beef. Was undecided and their prices were super reasonable so 2 sandwiches wasn’t bad on the pocket.
This place freakin rocks!! Said arrive in 15 minutes for a carryout, and 15 minutes later I walked in to a perfectly grilled pastrami sandwich being wrapped. I want to go into the long details of why this simple sandwich was so good, but best to be quick: Great bread, quality meat, heated on a griddle! (Not a Microwave), proper portion, assembled with care, grilled just right.
The Italian Beef was packaged just right for travel to a destination (not for eating on the road) which was like someone was psychic because the other sandwich was plenty for lunch. I came home and heated up the cup of gravy and beef in a saucepan. The beef is high quality like a slow cooked roast braised in the jus that it’s packed in... KILLER. I unwrapped the baguette that was still fresh (properly wrapped) put the beef on it, tossed on the cup of giardiniera, threw on the provolone, and dug in. I honestly waited to form an real opinion on the place till I tried this. It’s the best Italian beef in the whole StL metro area, an hour in any direction from the Arch.
I honestly never do the review thing, but I used to own a restaurant and when I get food like this from an unassuming little spot that claims to make sandwiches... nawwww these people can cook and create and these aren’t just sandwiches. Go eat here!
(PS today was ribeye day and saw a couple on the grill, seriously they are doing...
Read moreForget Jimmy John's. Subway is just meat from a deli. Panera makes sandwiches because the stumbled upon them, not because they care about them. Sammi's kills at the sandwich game, every single time. If you want a beast of a sandwich that makes you feel as though you could never sandwich better than you just sandwiched, you need to go to Sammi's. Their regular menu is solid, and you can't go wrong with whatever you order, but their daily specials are where they really shine. I once tried a cajun BLT, which featured some killer bacon and lettuce tossed in a cajun mayo with plenty of seasoning (NOT what I usually experience when I order a cajun dish at most places). I felt like the sandwich was made just for me, and I couldn't believe how great the combination of flavors were. For as much as you might pay at JJ's or Subway for one of their bland, run-of-the-mill concoctions, your money will go so much farther at Sammi's, because the flavor will knock you sideways. If freshness and flavor are important to your sandwich receptors, this is the...

If I want a sandwich, I can count on Sammi's for a delicious, generous one for lunch or dinner. Pick one out, hot or cold, and enjoy every bite.
They have daily specials that really are special. The special could be something classic or one that showcases the owner’s culinary creativity.
Scott, the owner, also reaches out on social media to get his customer’s input on dinner items that he should prepare. You have to pay attention because these super special treats are only available during a very limited time frame.
