Update: Back in the area, ordered some boneless Honey mustard (extra saucy) & garlic parmesan, seasoned waffle fries, bone in mango habanero with blue cheese dip for pickup over the phone. Service was excellent.
The food came out really great and was much better than last time. The bone in wings were pretty large and saucy. I enjoyed it so much that I had to order again a few days later (though at a different location)
My old recommendations remain (boneless Honey mustard and garlic parmesan) but would like to add boneless mango habanero into my hall of Fame. Oh and off course the house made blue cheese cant be beat.
Well done Hangar, well done!
Old review: Back in Amherst, have to hit up my favs. Coming off the Covid restrictions and right before school starts, the place is packed with a 2 hour wait. Decided to do takeout to avoid the crowds. Got the Skymaster with my usuals - Honey Mustard and Garlic Parmesan, blue cheese dip. Waffle fries.
Found a place to sit nearby. Ready to chow down, opened up the boxes and here's my honest opinion- There were barely any honey mustard sauce! (See pic) Why you do me wrong like that bro??? I noticed they are doing takeout in paper boxes. This explains the lack of sauce as it would seep through the bottom. Before they were in heavy duty black plasticy boxes. Score 1 for the environment, 0 for my taste buds. The waffle fries did not travel well. Pretty soggy and sad looking after a 10 min drive. The Garlic Parmesan seasoning was saltier than usual. While the chicken was freshy cooked, it was dried out on the inside and the prior lack of sauciness really hurt. Blue cheese as good as before!
So unfortunately, the food this time around wasn't the best. With that said, the flavor profile I was craving was met and everything was fresh and the server I spoke to was super nice despite being so busy so I'm rounding up to 4 stars.
Just wish ya'll didn't dry up the chicken and screw me on the honey...
Read moreWent to the Hangar regularly before Covid and was a big fan. Ventured back recently and was disappointed. Projected 45 minute wait on a Saturday early evening was no surprise. Found a two bar seats among 4 of us, got drinks and an order of onion rings--very good. Beer was delicious and service was friendly and fast. About 30 minutes later we were seated in the lower bank. We were then told the grill was closed because it was too busy and we could only order from the small wings/appetizers menu. This was not mentioned by hostess when we checked in or at the bar so it was disappointing after waiting to dine. Observed other diners in the upper section using the full menus but not sure why we only had paper ones with basic bar snacks on them. Ordered from the "closed grill" menu and the food was okay--mac-n-cheese, nachos, pulled pork sandwich, but we came for ribs and burgers, which used to be very good. The server didn't seem to even know ribs were ever on the menu. Got an order of wings to go with our old standard "crusin altitude" sauce and blue cheese dressing for next day. Got home to discover no sauce on them at all and whatever the chunks in the sweet flavored dressing were, they were definitely not blue cheese flavored. The beer and service was good but the food did not seem to be the same as we used to have, even considering the grill was closed. Hope it was just a fluke, but not sure I need to go back. Three stars because maybe it was just an off...
Read moreI really want to give this place 4 stars and it might only be an issue with what I specifically ordered. First the good: Big, fun bar/restaurant, lots of people very social, and most importantly a fantastic local beer selection (much of it their own stuff). This would normally rate at least 4 stars for me.
They also advertise how great their wings are, and in particular I've heard great things about their boneless wings. In fact, wings are central to their business. Nevertheless, on the last 2 visits, I ordered the boneless wings and found them to be simply awful. Let me also say that everything else there was great, but those boneless wings were terrible.
It seems that whatever part of the chicken they harvest these boneless wings from is from some bulletproof part of the bird that hasn't been discovered by other chicken places. Granted, these chunks of chicken are fairly large (not "pop in your mouth size") but they're also made out of some kind of highly fibrous meat-like textile that seems to be made out of layers of burlap. But at least they're dry. While the crispy buffalo-sauce covered exterior promises a great experience, the jaw numbing chewing process involved with consuming the actual chicken "meat" is simply to exhausting to be pleasurable. Initially I thought this was a one-time problem and I tried again last weekend and it was a sad repeat of what I hoped was a one-off bad night.
I'll likely be back but will try...
