The Outside Scoop — Restaurant in Ankeny

We’ve been coming here every Friday for over a year because the ice cream is excellent—easily one of the best spots in town. The quality has always felt worth the higher price, and it’s been a fun weekly tradition for our family.

Lately though, the portion sizes have become extremely inconsistent. We always order two scoops in one bowl, but what we receive depends entirely on who’s working that night. Sometimes it’s overflowing, and other times it barely looks like a single scoop. Tonight, my two-scoop order was noticeably smaller than my daughter’s one scoop.

A couple weeks ago, one employee seemed confused and thought two scoops meant a half scoop on each side of the bowl. It really feels like the newer staff aren’t being properly trained on standard portion sizes.

There shouldn’t be this much variation week to week. This is basic food prep, and we’re sure there are portion guidelines or scales to keep things consistent. I can’t keep justifying paying these premium prices when I never know how much ice cream I’m actually...

Have been coming here a few years, the ice cream is second to none. Happy to pay a premium for the premium gourmet flavors. I’d love to give 5 stars, but lately the high school kids working there have made the experience less than ideal. Inconsistency in ice cream sizes/scoops sets expectations & then leaves room for disappointment. Today I paid for a double and my wife got a single, but somehow she had more ice cream than me. Being asked “do you know where that’s at?” when you ask for a flavor is a little odd as well, especially when asking for one of the most popular permanent flavors. Although, I suppose that’s preferable to being served the wrong flavor, which happened to me last visit. Visited this fantastic ice cream shop on a Friday evening for the first time ever! Both employees were super friendly and gave us a couple samples. It was so hard to pick what to get due to them having so many delicious sounding options, including a few seasonal choices! They offer sundaes, ice cream cake, pints, quarts, and have a decent selection of vegan options. The sizes pictured were one of their smallest and even still it was a great size. The store is super clean and tidy too.

My only minor complaint is that they only have one milkshake size and it seems to be pretty large. I wanted a milkshake but didn't want a huge one.
