Cakes By Rubina — Restaurant in Ann Arbor

Can't even book an appointment! I originally called and spoke to Rubina, I gave here a description of what I was looking for for my wedding cake/ Dessert table as well as some other info on times, dates, etc. I was then told to email her all of the same information and she would respond with a list of times to choose from for my appointment (why can't you set an appt over the phone?). I did-No response. I emailed again a few days later, this time I did get a reply, and was asked what flavors I wanted to try, (something I could have provided in my first email had I known) with no direction as to what flavors they offered or where to find this information. I spent a good chunk of time digging through the website and guessing at what I was supposed to do. I've never ordered a cake before and would have liked some assistance. I email her the list of flavors I want to try and again get no response. So I email yet again and she asks for my phone number so we can discuss in further detail. Even though I have given her my phone number via email, and spoken to her on the phone already. It has been two weeks now and I am no closer to having an appointment than I was the day I first picked up the phone. Seems like customer service just isn't there. It's for a wedding so this is pretty much guaranteed to be a big check for her, you would think she would be more eager to reel me in. Now reading other reviews, I hear that the cake doesn't even taste that great! PASS! UPDATE: I ended up going in for my tasting after almost a month of back and forth with Rubina to get my appointment scheduled. One thing that was for certain was she DID NOT want to discuss prices. She talked in circles and avoided answering the question every time costs were brought up. It has been almost a month since our tasting, I have asked for an estimate several times, and she has yet to provide me with anything. She usually just responds with more questions or just ignores my request all together. She is now telling me that the QTY I want to order is not enough to meet the requirement for the tasting (that has already occurred AND WE PAID for!) and continues to insist I increase my order size. And no, we weren't blown away by the cake. Overall opinion= Difficult to work with and shady when it comes...

A friend of mine recently had Rubina's make her wedding cake. Although beautiful, the taste was thoroughly unimpressive: dry and lacking in flavor. I did not realize her cake was from here or I would not have attempted to meet for a cake tasting. Still, I did, and my experience was highly disappointing.

I have been searching for a wedding cake with a specific flavor, and while I understand they were unable to fulfill my request, the response I received was very rude. I was told a story of another couple with a special request (guava) and how it took too long and how it made more sense for this couple because they actually used to have this cake all the time. Since I had not personally had the cake myself, I was quickly dismissed and there wasn't even a discussion on why this flavor might be important to me or my knowledge of other cakes with this flavor. I was chastised and condescendingly told how I need to understand the difficulties in preparing a cake like this, and made to feel bad for even asking about the possibility.

Still, I decided to give this place a second chance and meet with her to try some of the other flavors of her cakes. I was told to send her the flavors I would like to try. Unfortunately, I had a mix up, and did not send them to her. Still, I came in for the cake tasting at the appointed time. I was scolded like a child and told that my meeting had been cancelled. No call, no warning, just cancelled. I did not appreciate the rude and disrespectful treatment I received. I have already tasted cakes from other venders in the area, some who are even able to fulfill my request, and I will not be pursuing business...

My (now) wife and I commissioned Rubina for both a simple wedding cake and a spread of cupcakes for our wedding. Prior to our wedding weekend we were able to meet with Rubina in-person to discuss what kinds of flavors and styles we wanted for our special day. We selected a simple set of 6-dozen Triple Chocolate cupcakes and 6-dozen Triple Vanilla cupcakes as general crowd-pleasers (though let this review show that we were quite impressed with other flavors of cupcake too!), and for our wedding cake we ordered a Vanilla layered cake with lemon frosting and lemon curd filling. Rubina was also able to prepare a few vegan and gluten-free options for our guests, which made those with specific dietary restriction feel welcomed as well. Because her bakery is closed on Sundays, she was able to have our cakes prepared the day before the event, and was very helpful in providing detailed instructions in how these cakes ought to be stored and served.
