I've had such mixed experiences with Washtenaw Dairy. It seems like when it goes right here, it goes really right. And when it goes wrong, it goes really wrong.

As for what goes right--the ice cream is great. That lemon custard is outstanding, and I've never seen anything like it anywhere else. So I tend to get a kiddie size of that, and I end up with a giant and affordable portion.

People tend to go nuts over their donuts, but I think they're just okay.

As for what goes wrong--the line can be overwhelming, the seating inside is dark and the tables often sticky, and recently we had a bad customer service experience.

To explain the customer service thing... my fiance and I both took the commuter challenge, and thus both received coupons for a free scoop of ice cream. One day last week we were out biking on the Old West Side and thought, hey, let's go see if we can redeem the coupons from our phones. We waited in line for a while before we got to ask someone, and the guy turned out to be really brusque with us. His answer was no, which I do and do not understanding (do, in that they can do whatever they want. don't, in that his logic didn't actually make sense.). We asked to speak with a manager and when someone finally came over, he just said "No." and turned on his heels and walked directly away from us. I've never seen anything like it. No discussion, no back and forth, just "No" and walk away. It felt really rude and inappropriate, and while we were admittedly hassling them a bit because it felt illogical and unfair, it's weird to have a customer service representative just turn and walk away while...

We waiting in line for 40 minutes to give this place a try. The line wrapped around the inside of the building and extended outside. Unfortunately, I don’t think the ice cream was worth the wait. Though it was good, it tasted just like average ice cream you can buy at the grocery store. Additionally, the line moved soo slow, with just 3 people working at a time. With the amount of business, they likely could’ve hired some more help for the busy evening. Finally, the place does not lend itself well for indoor seating due to the long lines. However, I will give them props for probably the most reasonable prices in town and for the most generous serving sizes! Bravo for catering to large groups and families as well. Would I wait in a long line for the ice cream again? No. Would I come back if there was no line? Sure. (Pictured are single scoop cup/waffle cone. Attached are videos of some of the flavors- we weren’t able to look at the options before ordering due to the chaos at...

I went in to get donuts. They had a VERY VERY small selection. I wanted a glazed nut donut but all they had was maple glazed nutty donuts. I also would be liked a sour cream donuts but They didnt have any. They should either move house that for sale next door or bull doze it & expand the store so they can carry a BIGGER variety of donuts. A lot of apartment builders are buldozing blocks of homes or strip malls to make way for more apartments. So im sure Washtenaw dairy could bulldoze 1 home to expand their store. If not that wht not BUILD A NEW BIGGER STORE elsewhere in Ann Arbor. In fact Target has a building lot for sale off Ann Arbor Saline. Also over buy Zeeb rd Meijer there are some outlets for sale. Ellsworth & Carpenter in front of Rave theater also has out lots for sale. A 2nd store might not b a...

They don't make their own ice cream The size is very generous and the price can not be beat. I ordered a single scoop cone. The girl serving me put two scoops on it. When I told her I could not eat that much ice cream, she took some off, she said this is a kids size. It was still more than I could eat, so she she ended with just one scoop on my cone. She said this is the baby. It was still a massive scoop and was only a $1.59 The part that disappoints me is that it is called Washtenaw Dairy. For a place that has dairy in the name, I was expecting them to make their own ice cream. I was told they stopped making ice cream and buy other ice cream to serve there.

This isn't just an ice cream shop! There are a few grocery items available Donuts and coffee, my parents loved the shakes! A single scoop helping is almost like a pint of ice cream. This is an Ann Arbor staple and hopefully always will be park near or far it's a lovely walk either way. In the summertime it's very nice to walk down the street to Bob elementary school and let the kids play while you enjoy some ice cream. I will always love going here and frequent in the summer often the staff moves quickly! So don't be deterred by a line, and I always leave a tip.
