So happy I asked Google Maps to show me a coffee shop in Anoka that wasn't part of a chain. Oakwood Cafe is family owned, it is a beautiful combination gift shop, floral shop and sandwich coffee shop. I arrived just before 10:00 a.m. and there were several small groups enjoying coffee and conversation there. There are 4 retro 1950's tables that can accommodate up to six guests apiece, and then a long counter at the front window with high top chairs fit a single or deuce. Ordered a strawberry lemon scone, the flavor was not as strong as I would have liked but the texture was great. With that a nice latte and I was able to spend time looking over the handmade gifts, wonderful collection of cards for all occasions, at a florist putting together bouquets and perused large collection of house plants for sale, too! Daughter got a slice of lemon poppyseed bread-- the icing was a lovely tart lemon compliment to the soft bread consistency and the poppyseed gave it a wonderful crunch- Daughters review plus she loved the lemonade which in her words was the right combination of sweety/tarty. I had a scone oatmeal butterscotch and it was perfectly baked with a crunchy exterior and a soft inside. Read moreMy family and I travel up to the cities from Duluth semi-regularly and can never escape the obligatory Tobie's stop for rolls. If this sounds like you, then let me officially recommend we switch things up and start going to Oakwood instead. The cinnamon rolls were moist, flavorful and the icing to bread ratio was perfectly proportioned. Beyond that, the cafe is cozy and the staff were friendly with great service. The owner even has one heck of a mustache... And THAT'S the kind of man you want baking...
