Fronteras Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Appleton

So disappointing!!! I literally can't even... I am a big foodie who loves nothing more than trying and supporting local, family-owned restaurants. I try never to go to chain restaurants and always like keeping my money local. My absolute faves are sushi and authentic Mexican.

This place has some great reviews including several recent ones, but I have no idea where they ate, because the only comments I read that are remotely accurate are that their hot sauces are hot and they truly ARE delicious! I 100% concur, to the point that I joked with my daughter that maybe I should stick the 2 sauce containers in our bag so we actually got something for our money. However no amount of hot sauce made this food taste any better. One of my favorite dishes are sopes with carnitas... so imagine my excitement to see the Crispy Fried Pork (known as CARNITAS), as an option on the sopes plate. When the dish came I was a bit suspect as the bit of pork I saw poking out from the toppings didn't look even slightly crispy, so now imagine my horror having to spit out my first bite which was literally a luke warm cube of pure flab... I was mortified. It was disgusting! I was determined to find the good and started digging through the toppings to find some actual pork... in addition to lots more chunks of solid flab were a few pieces of soggy pork, but not one bite of carnitas. This crime against amazing carnitas everywhere was made even worse by cold orange rice and watery re-"fried" beans... both were equally lacking in flavor and quality.

Now being a person who goes to restaurants frequently, and given the continued fallout from the ridiculousness of the pandemic, I know restaurants are still struggling, so I like to give places the benefit of the doubt, however, the server was not any better than the awful food.

She didn't check on us, didn't refill our waters, and brought us 1 set of utensils for 4 people. Had to ask for more, she brought one more set, so I ended up walking up and getting my own. When the server did finally come back and asked how everything was, my pregnant daughter just wanted to leave, but I mentioned how disappointing and NOT good the food was, specifically the carnitas, she just shrugged her shoulders and muuttered sorry and walked away. No offer to get us something else, no offer to discount it, or bring a new one, nothing. On top of all that, they have no actual menus, so if your phone is dead or heaven forbid you don't have one, I guess you can't order? On second thought, that may be your saving grace! You're also expected to look at your own bill online and pay it there as well. Talk about not wanting a tip 😒

$45+ flushed down the toilet😡

If there was a way to put zero stars I would. I rarely take the time or make an effort to do a review unless it's to leave a glowing review so that my favorite places get the props they deserve and hopefully stay in business.

The food was great but the customer service was terrible. When the waitress handed us our bill I left a 20% tip even though the service was subpar and only after the payment had already gone through my sister had realized that the lady waitressing us had charged us for 3 extra sodas that we never asked for nor received, luckily my sister had checked the bill which was $90 for two people before we left. Not to mention that right after we noticed the bill was wrong, my sister overheard the waitress speaking loudly in Spanish about how we noticed but it was too late and we already paid. After I had called the waitress over to fix the problem she tried giving us a hard time saying that she couldn’t refund and the “system was closed already”, she ended up refunding us the money back and we re-paid the right amount which was $60 and still left her a tip. I will not be going back and honestly would...

By all means whenever I go to Fronteras Mexican restaurant it's always a 5 star experience. Granted sometimes the language barrier is hard between English & Spanish, but they get there food spot on. Sope's, burritos, tacos are my go to, but if you see some different foods you ask & the people there are wonderful to share with you on what it is, to be able to order it next time. I walk outta the restaurant full, wishing I wouldn't of ate so much. There nothing like Diablos Taco Trucks or Fast Taco trucks where you order a burrito and get nothing but rice & a little bit of meat. Fronteras Mexican restaurant fills you up for the price you pay Always a 5 star experience. This company should expanded to the UP of Wisconsin because all there is, is Texmex crap and no authentic Mexican food in 80 miles radius.
