Dead Reckoning Tavern — Restaurant in Arcata

As far as beer bars get, this is a pretty shining example of the concept tweaked just a little, and done right. It's not traditional all the way, they sell records and there's pinball machines, but it's not so far off the wall that it doesn't make sense. Overall, a great spot to sip some suds in Arcata.

Excellent supply of beers available. A ridiculous amount of taps, and a large assortment of bottles to boot. They also have a good range of glassware, which for the true beer geek is a big plus. I especially enjoy that they have more than one sour beer available on tap. What's more: the staff actually seems to know and appreciate beer so they can guide you a little if you're not sure what you want/what to get.

The layout is open, with big windows facing the corner. Nice long bar to sit at if you'd rather. No real food...

Best selection of beers in the entire county, hands down. Prices reflect the availability of said beer. Obviously sours are going to cost more as they need to age longer and that glass of beer from clear across the country may be $8 but where do you think you are, a bar? Nay, this is a Tavern offering the finest liquids in all the lands. Don't know where to even start? Don't hesitate to ask the bartenders for recommendations, they may appear gruff but they're good people behind their beards. Great atmosphere, much better than elsewhere elbowing in at a bar to drink the same old beer surrounded by liquored drunks. Very disappointed with the bartender working at the time we went in, around 7:30-8pm. We were out having a great time visiting our Humboldt state friend in Arcata, who was from a different state and her ID expired very recently. Not only did she have all the legal paperwork attached to her ID but she has been of drinking age for quite some time. The bartender did not take 2 seconds to ask his manager or anything, but immediately said he cannot serve her. They lost all our business, but we had an amazing night at another bar who had the logical thinking and decency to allow her in. She has never had an issue at any bar, EVER. All in all, never going there again, and we will be spreading the word....
