The Union is one of Ballston's hidden gems. I go regularly, and everything I’ve had is fantastic. Lamb chops, burgers, steak, French fries, ice cream, everything. The lambchops in particular are on par with Morton’s, Elbit’s, or any other DC staple without the once-a-year price tag.
Great for a low-key date night. You’ll get fantastic eats at a low-price in an intimate atmosphere. When your belly is full, Quincy and Oakland parks are just down the street for after-dinner handholding. Or walk the other direction for an after-dinner glass of wine at Pirouette or beer and ping-pong at Quincy Hall. If you live in the surrounding apartment towers, an exciting night is even closer.
The ordering system is a bit awkward. The menu is on a blackboard above the register, like a burger or BBQ spot, but the cuisine is closer to white cloth fine dining. The second time, it appeared the restaurant may have been closed (which is not uncommon considering the time of day and location) and upon me asking about it, the manager waved his arms in attempt to make me feel stupid and gave an attitude as I ordered placed a take out order. I requested a beer as I waited and was refused despite me having wine in hand while I was there. Furthermore, I just didn't feel the food was worth the price charged when you consider the quality and...
Read moreA hidden gem in Ballston-Virginia Square. Really hidden -- you can hardly tell there's a restaurant here. But glad I found it! Enjoyed dinner here last night. Everything was very fresh and servings were generous. Chose the yuca instead of fries -- best yuca I've had -- crispy outside, light and fluffy inside. The "Union Burger" was delicious. Prices are very reasonable. Good wine selection. Wish they had cocktails. (Coming soon, they say...) Will...
