Avoid the Overhyped DC Thai Spot: Urban Thai

Urban Thai is a lovely small restaurant with delicious food and quick, friendly service. I went on a Wednesday night at about 6:30 pm and it was not crowded, but there were several tables filled, both inside and outside in the covered patio area. The staff took m order quickly, double checking to make sure they got it right. My food came very fast; I had my appetizer within 5 minutes of ordering and my entrée within 10 minutes. I had a tom kha martini, which was quite good and garnished with a chili, the pork and shrimp dumplings, and the butternut squash and tofu in red curry. Everything was delicious and the portions were a good size for me; I couldn't quite finish all the rice that came with my entrée--I was just a little too full. The red curry was mildly spicy, so be aware that at Urban Thai, mildly spicy does still mean there's going to be a little bit of a burn. I would definitely recommend Urban Thai to anyone who is looking for Thai food for lunch or dinner, and I will probably come back if I'm in the area again.

This is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the DC area, and so we were excited to go back on a recent visit to DC. The food overall was very good, but it wasn't my best experience at this restaurants. As a note, they have two menus, one is more authentic Thai food (and is geared towards their Thai patrons), but you have to ask for it if you are not Thai which I find a little annoying. The somtum (papaya salad) was also not super authentic on that day - you can see from the photo that they didn't shred the papaya enough, and I am not even sure if they used the right papaya. Service as a little lackluster as well on this visit, we had to ask twice for the drinks we ordered, and while a second server who sort of took over was very nice, the initial server who seated us and took our order seemed uninterested. Overall though the food is very good here, and if you like authentic Thai food be sure to ask for the Thai menu. I will definitely go again, but hopefully it will be as good as my past experiences next time. 4/5

Visited on Friday and would not recommend-DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT! The lack of cleanliness in the restrooms should have been our first red flag. We ordered the Larb Gai and as it had such a foul odor, literally smelt rancid. So much so the neighboring table made facial expressions as they could smell the odor in the air as it was brought to our table. We brought this to the mattresses attention very respectfully and she removed this from our bill and we ordered the spring rolls instead to which were good. Then, we ordered the Pad Thai which had the same rancid spell which tasted and smelled like the fish sauce had spoiled. We spoke with the manager who stated that’s how fish sauce tastes and smells to which was a lie. We have eaten Thai on many occasions and horrible odor was offensive to those sitting near us as evidence by the facial expressions of those seated near us. The manager discounted the meal with a $3 decrease. We were unable to eat the meal so to take $3 off wasn’t a sufficient resolve. I ordered a mango-tini to drink and the mango slice was rotten with black/brown/green spots of discoloration on the fruit. The staff lack effective communication skills, resolutions skills and this place should be inspected and I intend to notify the...

Placed an order via the restaurants website, the ratings were decent over the last few weeks all shall be well. I ordered Drunken Noodles with vegetables and Urban Fired Rice w/ Shrimp (chk#38). I went home knowing that everything was fine. I got home and noticed beef in my Drunken Noodles with vegetables. Upon calling the restaurant they said that it was not possible, I went back to the restaurant showed the beef. They said they would make it again this time Drunken Noodles with vegetables was a smaller portion and full of tofu. I shared, that I ordered Drunken Noodles with vegetables not tofu. I was then asked why I do not eat tofu. I then asked for my money back and it took longer because I ordered the food online. The entire process was disappointing from having to prove that there was beef to waiting for a second version of my meal that was still not ready or what I ordered. I spent two hours from entering to pick up my order to driving back to wait for my corrected order that was still wrong. No sincere apology just a have smile and frustration that I would not eat the the...
