In general, Black Eyed Pea is a great place to get a break from the standard sports-bar type, corporate ran, chain restaurants while still eating at a well known restaurant chain. The calm, quiet atmosphere is a great way to have a relaxing homemade dinner without making a homemade dinner. The food at any location is usually pretty good but the location at 88th & Wadsworth.... OMG people!! The rolls & cornbread are always super moist! Best I've ever had (except down south of course), so good you don't even need butter or honey! The sweet corn is the perfect level of sweet but not too sweet! The mashed potatoes are salted perfectly with just the right level of mash & small chunks! The gravy's never clumpy or runny, the cheesy broccoli rice casserole is always cooked through without being gummy, & the honey glazed carrots are never undercooked with the just the right amount of honey. But people, the pot roast... AMAZING!!! Better than any I've ever had, anywhere including home (sorry mom)!! So juicy, flavorful, & seasoned perfectly! It's so tender you can cut it with a spoon!! I could go on & on about it!! But I won't because I want to give a huge shout-out to the gentleman, I believe, is the Assistant Manager. His name is Mike & he's great!! Before he started working there it was just the same as other Black Eyed Pea restaurants but ever since he started working there you can see & taste the difference. Plus, he's always so happy & nice. He's always laughing & joking with people. He walks around asking the customers how everything is & you can tell he actually cares! He always brings my takeout order to me with a huge smile. He remembers my name, my order, my extra rolls & cornbread, & my family's food allergies, making sure that the food is safe for them! He truly makes the difference there! Thanks Mike for taking the time to make our dinner perfect!! And thank you to the rest of the crew there!...
Read moreI grew up in South Carolina- I know southern cooking, and this is NOT it. Absolutely horrible, start to finish.
The waitress took forever to even get to our table and when she did, said she'd be with us in a minute, then took two more to return. When she did, she was awkward and lacked any personality, or even friendliness.
The bread rolls were burnt. The sprite was flat. I ordered chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, and fried okra.
The chicken was a grayish hue instead of white and the breading was soggy, probably from putting sawmill gravy on it too long before the whole order was ready to come out.
This was made apparent by the literally five pieces of okra that came out in a side dish, brought out by the manager instead of our waitress who was very unavailable and absent throughout the whole process. He said more would be out in a minute. The waitress brought out more a couple minutes later that were not absolutely not finished cooking.
At this point, she asked how everything was, and I had to voice my complaints. I did so calmy and explained that I understood she did not oversee the cooking process. She then proceeded to open up about how the cooks always burn every other batch of rolls.
When the receipt came, there was a manager-given discount for an amount that was absolutely embarrassing to the Black Eyed Pea restaurant chain. I believe he discounted $3 on a $30 check.
I asked the waitress for a to-go box. She brought me one that did not even fit the mexican taco salad my husband had barely eaten. What if somebody had ordered this dish to-go on the phone for pickup? Would they tell the customer to just "break the shell and shove it in there" as the waitress did to us?
Absolutely horrible. Y'all should be ashamed. Especially after the $8 tip I left. Imagine what I would have left if you knew how to do your jobs...
Read moreSo the food is good when you stick to what they are known for. Chicken fried steak, home cooked meal etc. But this time my wife and I ordered the fiesta chicken wraps. Well....due to human or pc error by mistake we got buffalo chicken wraps and not fiesta wraps with jalepeno ranch. At first it was fine but then the taste of bleu cheese and wing sauce became over whelming to me. My wife still enjoyed it but after 2 bites i really couldn't stand it. I normally wouldn't say anything but i did to our waitress Ali. She was super responsive and offered me another one made correctly. Well.....guess what another bleu cheese buffalo wrap came out. The manager then stepped in very polite and we explained and looked at the menu to make sure we were not crazy on the difference between. He than got another one out and by this time it was just plain. Rather than wasting anymore time I left with the plain wrap. Leading me to believe either someone messed up and or the pc button for this item is incorrect. Either way the plain one worked when i added some ranch at home. And there wraps are usually awesome. 3 stars for trying to rectify the problem I would of done 5 if someone would just listen to the issue and...
