As a seasoned traveler always on the hunt for authentic local flavors, my recent stop at Luella's Too in charming Asheville was certainly one for the books! My taste buds were absolutely delighted – the food here is undeniably delish! Every bite was a testament to true Southern comfort, done right. The service was generally good, with friendly faces and a warm atmosphere that just pulls you in. However, even the best of us have our little quirks, and for me, it was the curious case of the disappearing drink refill. A small hiccup, perhaps, but when you're savoring good food, a full glass makes all the difference! Now, let's talk about the economics of deliciousness. The prices here lean a little on the higher side, and it's worth noting that all sides are extra – nothing's included, which can be a bit of a surprise if you're not expecting it. It's a small detail, but one that adds up quickly on the bill. And speaking of small details, I have to mention the sweet tea situation. As a connoisseur of Southern hospitality (and its liquid form), I was genuinely puzzled by the fact that sweet tea cost more than unsweetened. I mean, who does that?! It's like charging extra for sunshine on a perfect day – a minor point, perhaps, but one that sticks with you! Despite these few quirks, Luella's Too offers a seriously tasty meal in a vibrant city. If you're in Asheville and craving some high-quality, flavorful food, it's definitely worth a visit – just keep an eye on your drink and maybe budget a little extra for those delectable sides!

We were in Biltmore Park and could smell the BBQ wafting from outside, and were drawn to it. We went inside and ordered, and were prompted to tip during ordering before sitting down. While sitting, a couple of other people brought us our food and refilled our drinks. I asked them if the tip we left at the ordering went to them, and they said no. So when we were about to leave, I gave them some cash and told them it was for them. I was disappointed to watch them walk to the front and put my cash in the tip jar… so the tipping culture at this place was confusing. On to the food- it was delicious. It took about 15 minutes for it to come out. I ordered the chopped pork BBQ sandwich meal, which comes with one side and some hushpuppies. I chose the mac n’ hoop cheese for my side, and I also got an extra side of french fries because I was feeling hungry. The food was really good, and the sauce I got was good too. My boyfriend got fried okra, and I had some pieces. It was great, and not slimy at all, which some can be. Overall, we had a really nice experience.

Dang. The staff were hustling. They really put in a ton of effort and so I’m happy to reflect that here. They are really stepping up in terms of service. I have always loved their food though. I’ve been here twice and both times the staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. There’s not a lot of pressure because it’s counter service but they do bring you your food. And check on you. I would say this place reasonable in terms of prices. Especially for the area. Last time I got a sandwich and this past time we shared a plate. To be honest, I think I would stick with a sandwich because it’s nice to have their barbecue on bread. My partner had their wings recently and she appreciated being able to buy them as singles. They were well seasoned and sized. The barbecue is always delicious (pork and chicken) to me and their mac & cheese is lovely. I enjoy the hush puppies as well. I’ve gotten the salad before and it’s awesome. The establishment was also super clean overall. The service is fast and there’s a ton of space to spread out. Win win.

Luella's has two locations, and I would have preferred to visit the original one, but the newer version in south Asheville was more on my route. It is located in the Biltmore Park Town Square, an upscale outdoor shopping area, which was packed. There are valet and garage parking options, but I lucked out and found a street spot right out front.

The interior has a tasteful modern rustic aesthetic. Instead of trying to replicate a completely authentic bbq joint feel in a modern space, it combines the best of both. There was a line of about 10 people to order, which is done at the counter. It moved fairly quickly even though the lone cashier was helpful and patient in explaining the menu to us patrons.

The prices were commensurate with the surroundings, but I was hungry enough to splurge for a two meat platter. They were unfortunately out of brisket. However, the cashier informed me that they had they had just got ribs back, so I went for those along with chopped pork. I rounded out the tray with sides of their spicy vinegar slaw and calico baked beans.

Soft drinks are served in cans only, but they provide a glass and ice. I chose Cheerwine because I know of nothing better to wash down some NC 'que. I took my drink and number to a table and awaited my food. It took 20 plus minutes to come out, which seemed a little excessive but I wasn't in a hurry and didn't see a reason to complain, especially knowing how short-staffed many operations are these days.

I dug in once it did arrive. The pork was coarsely chopped and seemed to have a light vinegar on it. Despite having a visible smoke ring, there was little bark or smoke flavor, but it was juicy and fresh. My three rib bones were meaty and even more fresh. He wasn't lying about them just coming off the smoker. A flavorful crust concealed perfectly cooked meat inside that slid cleanly off the bone. The ribs were undoubtedly the winner between the meats.

Of the sides, the beans were my favorite. Lighter than typical baked beans, they were comprised of multiple types of beans in a thin sauce with good flavor. The slaw seemed to be just chopped cabbage in vinegar with some unusual spices- a new twist on the classic, I presume, but it didn't do much for me. The tray was completed with several finger-style hush puppies. It made for a filling and satisfying meal, if not exactly the traditional bbq experience I was expecting. Customers looking for good barbecue with a bit of a modern flair will not be...
