First off, I've definitely been spoiled when it comes to sushi having lived in SoCal for the past two years. That said, I was really surprised to find a solid sushi spot in western North Carolina! To be honest, I was a little hesitant to try out Mr. Sushi, but my cravings got the best of me. While the sushi here is as simple as they come, it was still satisfying.
Food: I had Combo #5 ($11.99) -- tuna and salmon roll, California roll, and 4 piece nigiri. Presentation was simple. Like I mentioned before, these were very simple rolls but they were fine taste-wise. Nothing tasted fishy, a nice nod to how surprisingly fresh the fish was. More over, the chef is more than willing to accommodate any customizations--I don't eat shrimp so that wasn't an issue and it was replaced with chef's choice. Overall, it wasn't amazing but it certainly wasn't bad either!
Value: A lot of the rolls are in the $7-13 range which is perfectly normal. The combo was a fair price IMO.
Service: Server was friendly and attentive.
Vibes: The location is a little peculiar as the bathroom is shared with with the gas station next door. Not really a big deal. There isn't a huge amount of seating inside so I'd say this spot is best for 2-4 people.
Overall, I'd recommend this spot for anyone craving sushi so give Mr. Sushi a shot!--I'm sure there aren't that many options in Asheville anyway haha. The food wasn't knock-your-socks-off amazing, but it was...
Read moreWhile visiting Asheville I searched for top rated sushi restaurants. Mr. Sushi was near the top of the list and I noticed reviews talking about how good the food was in a little place near the gas station. My wife and I wanted something more casual than the downtown sushi selections so we gave it a try.
The staff at Mr. Sushi were very kind and welcoming. We ordered sushi and two entrees - Pad Thai and Friwithice with shrimp.
Everything was fresh and well prepared...but severely lacked flavor. Any Sauces on the sushi was nearly flavorless. The shrimp on the fried rice was excellently cooked but the rest of the dish was bland. The Pad Thai with chicken tasted more like plain noodles with chicken. No flavor or spice on either dish.
We spied a bottle of Sriracha sauce at the sushi counter and asked for some. They confirmed we wanted Sriracha and warned us it was spicy. For us, Sriracha is pretty tame on the spice level so I wonder if the spice/flavor level matches the palate/preference of ther locals.
I say this and leave this review not in judgment but to let others know. The food at Mr. Sushi was very good in the sense of being prepared fresh but lacked any seasoning (except salt and black pepper). The sushi was definitely tasty and the price...
Read moreWe were completely dissatisfied with our takeout order. They packaged our salads in a tri-compartment container (think tv tray) with our HOT meals, which made them hot and super soggy. They were gross. We could not eat them. Not to mention, they were tiny salads. If we'd dined in, they would have served us more salad than that. The quality of service should be the same for everyone across the board, and they should be in their own, separate container.
Our dinners came with little rice (about as much as there was salad), and were over seasoned with pepper. We like spicy food, but this was not normal, this was not a complementing "spicy" (it's hibachi chicken). I think they accidentally spilled pepper on our meals. Everything was covered in black pepper. My mom couldn't eat hers.
This was an unpleasant dinner. It was a birthday dinner at that. We are highly dissatisfied, especially for the cost of the meals. We could have gone to Tokyo Express or Ichiban (for not much more), but we wanted to give you a try.
Maybe an indoor experience would be better? Maybe it's a fluke and this is an isolated incident? I don't know. I'm not one to usually leave reviews, but this was truly an unpleasant dinner experience...
